Spanish Grand Prix 2012, Catalunya - Race 5/20

So what Lewis should have done, is put it in a gravel trap by "accident" on the in lap and he would have been ok... :D

No.

You have to make it back to the pits under your own power unless you have a technical or mechanical reason for not doing so. Like braking down or crashing.

Telling your driver to stop because you think he doesn't have enough fuel is not a mechanical or technical reason. Its actually the exact behaviour that got the rule put in in the first place, again with Hamilton.

So if Lewis "crashed" just after the end of qualifying he would have been put to the back of the grid if there was no damage to engine/gearbox?

But why did it have to be mug faced pay driver oil funded unlikeable idiot driver who got it :(

LOL indeed hes coming across as a bit of knob in the interview on SSN.

Nice that Williams have got pole at the expense of Hamilton but still that back of the grid start really is a harsh one to swallow.

Hoping that Hammy gets enraged and just blasts his way into the top 6 for tomo.

I hope theres a 20 car pile up at first bend :D

When the race starts he should just have a Sunday drive round the track and park up in the pits. There really is no point in racing this one.

His earlier time, set when he clearly did have enough fuel to return to the pits would have put him fifth. Back of the grid is, in no way, proportionate to the offence.

Personally, I think Vettel, Schumi and Kobayashi should face penalties for not even trying to set a time. A rules chance is needed, methinks - getting rid of the pointless rule that you have to start on the same tyres would do it.

The problem with the tyres is the number of sets they have.

The teams have less sets per car now than they did during the indistructable Bridgestone era, which is just stupid. The FIA asked Pirelli to make tyres that wore out faster, and then reduced the number available.

The teams need 2 extra sets of tyres that are given back after Q2. It stops people needing to save tyres in Q3, but doesn't give any advantage to teams who go out in Q1 or 2.

Punishment required but far too harsh. At the most excluded from q3.

Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't race. I say race but I mean crawl around looking after 4 sets of tires.

Still think he can get some points.

He's in a car half a second faster than everyone else and will be 16 ish within a few laps. Unfortunatly it will take a good strategy.

If he gets rage he will just burn through tires.

Hope he pulls of something special.

Also bet he will finish infront of button.

When the race starts he should just get out of his car and stick two fingers up at the cameras, walk to whatever super car he is driving around out there, do some donuts and drive off in a plume of smoke :D

yep

the looks so professional, but the team is a joke.

they were practicing pit stops today, but without the full gear on, absolutely pointless.

nothing more to say. Everybody on here knows im a Mclaren fan, but I do regret getting their shirt. shame, a few years ago I would wear it none stop when ever I could. But now..... times have changed.

Would I be correct in assuming that if Hamilton "understeered" into the gravel pit and said he lost the front end, he would received no penalty today?

Yes.

But Hamilton did not know he didn't have the fuel. The team told him to stop. To get him to crash the team would have had to tell him over the radio to do so. And the FIA have access to all radio comms. A move like that would have not gone down well...

Depends at what point? As he obviously had to get the lap in but if he binned it after on the slow down lap then I would expect the same outcome?
