Spanish Grand Prix 2012, Catalunya - Race 5/20

Apparently, contrary to what some have been saying on this board, all teams are struggling to understand the tyres and the best way to get them to work.

Lewis is doing the best so far it's just that the tires don't last long...

edit=in my opinion ;)

I think the thing that worries me most about all the pictures of the Williams fire are that not a single one seems to show a fire fighter. Its all pictures of team members fighting the fire.

And its not even like were in some new country where the risks of motorsports are something new. Were in Spain, a country in the 1st world thats meant to be at the front of Motorsports.

Its shocking. They seemed completely unprepared.

Quite agree, it was a long time before a proper fire engine turned up. The fire had been put out by this time. Why wasn't there a fire engine in/near the pits?

Even at the lowest level of club motorsport in this country they are indredibly serious about the risk of fire. The fact it took until after the fire was out for anyone even resembling a firefighter to arrive should be a serious wakeup call to the FIA.

Do you think they could have got a bit too laid back about the risks of fire since removing in race refuelling?

It would be rather concerning if the FIA have made any changes in this matter since the ban on refuelling.

Thankfully the teams are still well prepared and trained in this, as was evident on Sunday. Plenty of fire extinguishers and more importantley the guys at the rear of the pits had fire hoses. At least there was some sort of fire fighting equipment to hand but there really should have been a fire engine(s) and fire fighters in the pit complex to deal with this.

ferrari never made an f1 car without restrictions.

they made the
F40
FXX
which are suposed to be their nearest cars to an f1 experience.
i think the fxx used an f1 engine ,not sure about thr f40

Ferrari have been branding things as F1 style on their road cars for years. How much of it is actual technology transfer and how much is just marketing hype is a difficult one to tell. I mean even some humble hatchbacks now have 'F1 Style' flappy paddle gearboxes, but that doesn't mean they are actually F1 gearboxes.

There have been a few concepts of ultimate racing cars thrown around over the years, but the only one I know of that has got anywhere near 'existing' is the X1 as it exists virtually and Red Bull built a life sized model.

The X1 could never exist IRL though as the G forces it generated would cause the driver to blackout.

doubt the x1 pulls more g-force than a pilot in a jet fighter or an astronaut on takeoff tbh

EDIT: wiki claims lateral 8g's

fighter pilots can do 9-11

Yes, but they are consistent G forces. The X1 would create 8G in all directions changing from one to the other at every corner ever few seconds.

The X1 is never going to produce much vertical g though is it? Unless it does a Mercedes CLK GTR style exit from the track.

People can withstand lateral g's a lot easier.
