Can I just clarify - you beleive people should be 'content' with having damage repaired 'out of insurance' at a bodyshop that isn't of the victims choosing?

There has to be a bit of give and take. If the person you hit insists on taking it to a specific place then you've got to suck it and pay, but Most people won't though. They've either want insurance or it just fixed (or a few quid in the back pocket if they're a bit ***** like me ;)).

If someone hit my car I'd offer them the chance of paying the repairs rather than going through insurance - as I'd have to declare a non-fault accident and that would put my insurance up. However if they chose the non-insurance route I'd be calling the shots on where the work's done.

this is the main idea, although I do feel it varies greatly on the value of the car and the way the owner regards it.

If someone scratches the door of my chavmobile I'd rather get a few quotes, see how much it costs to get it sorted (probably a few hundred quid even at a cheapo garage) and then simply accept less than that in cash as I can source a door of the same colour on the bay in a couple of weeks a lot cheaper and keep the change for my effort. ;)

If on the other hand the same thing happend to someone's 15k BMW, I can definately see why he wouldn't want to get it repaired at some shady place where you can see huge gaps in panels afterwards and paint that doesn't really match.

Dealers will always rip you off, but I don't see the problem as long as both parties agree on a place that does a decent job.

Exactly, more than anything I'd want it done at a bodyshop approved by the marque of my car, for the paint warranty alone. If you take it to 'Daves Bodyshop' down a dirt track in Slough and there are issues afterwards then you'll have much more trouble getting it sorted than if you're at a BMW/Audi/Ford/whatever approved bodyshop where you can complain to the marque.

How did she manage to do that on a pillar? Was she going sideways?

Shes 18 which means she has been driving for about 1 years tops. Which unsuprisingly has led her to drive that kind of car into a multistorey car park pillar.

I would always want the best for my daughter but if I ever bought her a car like that I would have her trained to use a car like that at that young age. Thats the more worrying thing than calling her a spoilt brat. If she can't navigate a multistorey car park. Whats going to happen when she loses it on a bend in the countryside.

Yes, if someone walloped my car, I'd definalty be happy letting the the other party choose where the repairs were done.

That's silly. They'd pick the cheapest knock off place possible. You'd be happy with that?

I'd definitely go with someone of my choosing and who i was certain would do a good job.

Hint of sarcasm missed there I think....

Had to LOL.

Bearing in mind the car is pretty new i wouldn't have thought £1500 was too bad, then again i would probably consider taking it to the dealers if i had your kind of money tbh.

Too much BS posts to read but...

Doesn't this depend on the bodyshop doing the work....?

My old E46 saloon was in excess of £1400 when I had the driver and passenger doors knocked back out and sill trim fixed + respray after an incident with a metal bollard. that was at the main dealer. I'd imagine the TT would be far less as the damage is far less than what mine was as well :p

The amount of times I've either almost rubbed one like that, or in trying to miss one almost hitting a wall on the other side, is uncountable!!

I did that once in a works van about 10 years ago. Fortunately the van was a pile of crap so the dent and scratches I made just added to others that were already there! :D

It is a Audi TT, not a veyron. Whilst it is a very, very nice car for someone of a young age it is a long way away from being a flame spitting widow making beast.

The damage had sod all to do with the type of car or the lack of specialist training how to use it. It was just a car parking ding probably caused by not paying quite enough attention. It still probably would have happened if she was in a Fiesta or Cilo or any other 'acceptable' young person's car.
