Spec me a board game for Christmas

Get yourself a Nintendo Wii and some four player games or even some old GameCube games.

Get four controllers and profit.

We always play Uno and Monopoly over Christmas. We have our own rules (obviously) which keeps the game fun whilst not dragging on for too long.

Some of the european (german?) style board games are cool like Agricola.

most of the proper boardgames have different phases where you can take different actions etc.

Settlers of catan always gets a mention but I always found it boring and it's basically a game of maths. (most likely numbers to come up on a dice etc)

Just a few recommendations then.

Pandemic - co -operative save the world game.
Flash Point Fire Rescue - Co-operative rescue people and stop the building burning down/collapsing
Quadropolis - Strategic city building
Mystic Vale - Deck/engine building
Sushi Go - Card selection points accumulation
The Captain is Dead - Co-operative escape from the aliens
Azul - Pretty simple but great puzzle game.
Carcassonne - classic tile laying game.
Colt Express - Plannin' Robbin' Shootin' and Punchin'... on a train!
Welcome to Dino World - roll and write
The Crew - The Quest for planet nine - Co-operative card game
Ticket to Ride Europe - Classic
Ticket to Ride London - Smaller version of Ticket To Ride Europe
Dice Hospital - Dice based engine builder
Splendor - Engine builder
Sagrada- Very pretty and a really good dice puzzle game.
7 Wonders - card based engine builder
Railroad Ink - Lovely dice based roll and write puzzle game that's really nice and small.

Just One - fantastic, but needs more people than 3.
Blockbuster - Movie based party game

RISK, Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, Trivial Pursuit

+1 for Trivial Pursuit. In recent years, we've had it running on a laptop PC on the dinner table. If you place the laptop on a cheeseboard (carousel / swivel type), it means you can easily turn the laptop around to face the person that is reading the questions. It's just a great game to play after you've had your dinner and the booze is still flowing.

Another great board game, but again software-based is any of the Mario Party games. Just look them up as there are loads of them.

Ticket to Ride isn't a bad shout, but from recollection could be going on for a couple of hours? So I guess it depends what your definition of 'dragging on forever' is?
Nordic edition is designed for 2-3 players and won’t last an hour.

All my relatives are either:
. No longer here
. Live 80 plus miles away
. To frail to travel
. I don’t get on with them.

Im jealous of friends who have most of their family living a few miles away and get on with each other.

Where do you live? I'm not joking when I say come round for a beer, I'll even bust out cards against humanity :D

Seeing if there’s a board game that meets these criteria:
. Suitable for three players - as some games are only suitable for 4+ players.
. Easy to understand
. Doesn’t drag on forever

My parents and I play board games over Christmas. We have Monopoly, Cluedo and Sorry! Plus cards. Monopoly we just play until a certain time or if one of us is bankrupt.
King of Tokyo

Simple, quick, silly and lots of fun!

EDIT....

I would also echo those who were suggesting :
Carcassonne
Ticket to ride (a bit longer then the other 2, ~1.5hrs, but chilled fun).

Completely forgot about that one. Yeah, it's fun and simple.

Ticket to Ride London, New York or Amsterdam take a lot less time. About 30 minutes for a first game. Plays 2-4 people and is a significantly smaller board. Same game idea, just smaller and faster.

I play with my friends a lot and we like: catan, carcasonne, ticket to ride, splendor and survive escape atlantis.
Catan is my personal favourite but it can be a long game sometimes especially if you play with someone who spends ages umming and ahhing about what to do!

Ludo.

I never really hear of this game being played these days. But back when I was a kid and visited my great aunt and uncle, this would be one of the many board games they would have in the drawers.
