Spec me a CCTV System

Yer just been looking at the locations in the warehouse and probably will go for a coupe of 4mm lens and a couple of 2.8mm.

What cable do you recommend? I'm going to need around 150m plus so was maybe looking at getting a 305m reel.

Cheers

Ask anyone in the networking section of this forum, the cable they sell is affordable, and non cca. I think review5 gives a further 5% off.
They also have all the jacks, boots, crimps etc that you will need to terminate.

I have finally started - picked up new Hikvision 7608 this morning - next is HDD and PoE 8 port switch - That is first job setting up NVR and switch and cabling from loft to PC desk - First camera will be in facia above garage door - there is enough room between door frame and joist - so hopefully I will get a turret type and cut hole in plastic facia and poke lens through from inside- being a bungalow everything is within arm reach of ground.

My new summer project.

I must have read this thread a dozen times but I've finally ordered some gear!
I've bought the Hikvision 7608NI DVR and a Hikvision 4MP EXIR turret dome with a 3TB purple drive.
I've got our sparks coming over on Friday to sort out installation for the house, he's done one for himself a few years back but when he started insisting I'd need BNC connectors I thought I'd get a basic kit of just 1 camera etc. to show him what modern kit looks like!

I've just realised something.

With the addition of the NVR to my home network I'm out of spare ports on my main switch.

I think it may be time for me to invest in a new 16 port gigabit switch for behind the router, move the 8 port switch to where the NVR is going to live, and re-orgnaise my cabling.

We're currently at 2x wireless access points (one at the end of a homeplug connection), the main router, and 2x 8 port gigabit switches, if someone had said to me when I wired the house up that I'd be using 16+ devices I would have laughed at the idea.
Fortunately most of them are low bandwidth so a single gigabit link to the main switch from the access points/secondary switch isn't a major issue.

Question time again -- Vimes has said he has a 8 PoE switch for his cameras and it looks like I need one as well - I can only get at a push 3 Cat5e cables from PC up to loft in electrical black plastic conduit - (fitted for cat5 cables and there is two ethernet and one phone cable already in there)

I have found two switches
1st is No name 8 PoE switch with fifth port to uplink to existing network for 85 quid.

The second is Netgear GS110TPv2 Pro safe 8 PoE ports and also two gigbit ports for 99quid.

Like vimes I am also willing to over spec for future so should I pick the Netgear and can I then connect it to BT HH5 gigabit port.

Just seen TP Link TL- SG 2210 on OCuk here for 75 quid

This networking is all new to me so each step is a learning curve and I am relishing the challenge (It is to me)

So now to make it easier would either of those mentioned do the job I require -Would I be able to use the gigabit port on HH5

The WG Purple HDD has been posted so things are moving

Thanks

I've just got the TP-Link TL-SG2210 bud, works flawlessly with my 3 hikky cameras.
I believe it's rated to go up to 50watts so it should be enough to cover a fair amount of cameras.

How many cameras do you have? - don't forget one port on the switch will be needed to connect back to the network so that's only 7 ports available no matter which make you choose.

Any questions about the SG2210 I'll be happy to help with bud.

Not got cameras yet - plan on 4 but plans always go awry - so while I am buying I want to over spec rather than have to do it again in future.

Only got NVR at moment - HDD is on it's way so when get switch I can wire it all up which is the graft part.

Once switch and cabling is done wiring and fitting cameras is the easy part here.

If no more replies come in I will order later tonight from OCUK

Almost forgot - What are those two SFP slot's for ??

Thanks

According to what Vimes says in a previous post I think 50W should be ok for up to 6 cameras bud.
I looked around a fair bit before I ordered my SG2210 - its got link aggregation, VLAN tagging and all sorts which might come in handy later - Most of these features are only found on much expensive rivals.
SFP slots are for additional connections using SFP adapters - i.e. Fibre etc. - I'm actually quite glad I got this as I've been reading something about fibre is soon going to be more affordable thanks to a reduction in cost of the hardware required to recieve/send (i.e. the SFP modules).

hth - Only point I recall about installation of the switch is that its pre-configured for a 192.168.0.x network environment. I had to change it over manually to the same subnet as what I currently use. Easy enough task - simply plug a laptop into it and set a static IP address of say 192.168.0.5, make changes and reboot - jobs a good un.

@Werewolf - at the time that I started with CAT5E cabling and switches etc, along with wireless access points, I would never have imagined that we would have the amount of both wireless and wired connections as we now done. Goodness knows how many power adaptors we have plugged in continuously, even more if ever charge a phone...!
I have multiple switches dotted over the house as demands changed and when I fitted the CCTV equipment the cameras and POE switch is connected to the Internal LAN but that is not needed for its recording. I wanted to keep the CCTV traffic, quite large when recording 24/7 over 6 cams, away from the LAN.

As for the POE switch and camera power consumption mine use around 6w each max when their IR light is on, that would not cover a PTZ type camera.

Right, wondering if anyone can help. I'm looking at getting a CCTV system for our B&B. Will be looking at about 10 cameras recording 1080p/20 with about a month history. Would like ability to set motion triggers and alerts during the night and remote monitoring over the internet, although the internet here is only 2 meg, is that a problem?

After doing a lot of research with a hell of a lot of different options, brands etc and very few guides I have got the idea that since I am needing to run cables I might as well run Cat 6 rather than Coax, and the Hikvision is a good brand.

I am looking at this system http://www.cctvkits.co.uk/hikvision-3mp-1536p-10-12-camera-ip-kit.html with 2x2tb WD red drives, with a mixture of camera types depending on indoor/outdoor and positioning. Is this a good bet? The main thing I am not sure on now is which NVR as I am not sure on the differences in models.

Cheers

Not been my day today !!!

WD purple came today - so put it in connected up - switched 2nd monitor to HDMI and fired it up.

NOWT !! - started messing about and could hear something - being bit deaf it's hard sometimes - The Hik was beeping as well - Put my hand on Hik and could feel vibration - turned it off -gone - Out came HDD and powered it up in my hand and sure enough vibrating like hell - Finally got it RMA from WD .

Changed monitor settings back to DVI and nothing - no picture at all although it came up with Windows starting and four spinning colour dots and monitor one fired up but not number two- No signal it said -

After posting new HDD back set about finding problem - got Benq out of other room -it fired up but have lost my individual screens - I get same on both - Grrrrr.

So it might be I have knackered my iiyama by putting two source into it even though it was switched to correct input (I hope)

Never realised how good two monitors are - I will be peed off if I have to get new monitor after all this layout.

I ordered a switch last night - Went for netgear.

I can see me opening another bottle of brandy tonight - no I won't -- will go do it now - I am fed up.

I feel your pain, whilst not quite as bad I've had a similar coouple of weeks.

What should have been a quick setup for the cameras took about 2 weeks to get them paired properly and working as the NVR lost it's password when I powered it down for a couple of days, and then it tooke me about a week (including several days of fiddling before contacting HiKvision for a reset), then the camera activated originally on the NVR wouldn't pair up again after being disconnected - my suspicion is it was still using the original password but didn't mind until it had to re-pair, that took a day.

Now my plan to connect the garage camera up over a home plug seems to be running into issues, it seems that my homeplug connection has dropped from 30mb/s to none with one adaptor set, and about 2-3 with another.
Although after an afternoon spent back and forth it looks like the issue may be down to the mains adaptor for the TP-link POE injector, if I turn it off the connection comes back (it's not the POE injector itself as the issue remains when I have the PSU on but not connected).

Then Plex stopped working, after an hour I found a post that suggested that if you tell it to update in Chrome you can run into issues as apparently Chrome truncates some long file names.
Sure enough downloading the update in another browser and running it worked.
Why the **** Plex didn't give an error message when it updated I don't know, all I knew was that it was starting to load, the icon appearing, then disappearing (and the logs were not much help).

And my computer suddenly started having a really nasty mains hum on the mic input about 2am last night (before the plex update), which I have no idea why, I haven't changed any hardware recently, one headset doesn't appear to have anything passing from the mic through (just the hum), and another one has the signal from the mic but with the hum.

I think I'm going to sit in a barn somewhere with a book for a few hours, tech seems to want to drive me nuts at the moment..

I sympathise. --Had a good few Brandy's then started afresh- put monitor on other pc - didn't work - checked imputs-- HDMI2 - I wanted HDMI1 - kept changing it and no go - Duh !! dumb idiot kept pressing wrong button to save settings- Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Got monitor back in place and can't set them up as M1 on right and M2 on left - Right was for Firefox and Left for Thunderbird- do you think I can change it - I think AMD has changed the tools as before it was piece of cake because I as a stupid old man could understand it.

Only bright light at moment is I haven't got to drive over to Stoke for new monitor.

Another shining light is I checked conduit this morning and can get three cat 5's up them to loft. - Also found one Ethernet cable in there was a just in case cable and I wanted to fire up PC in garage. So that's coming out and can take it from switch - Before I have even got the NVR up and running I only have four ethernet port free for cameras .

Damn damn and blessed damn.

I know more brandy

There is never enough brandy ;)

I thought that you was using a POE switch for the cameras...?

What a complicated fix - back to normal on monitors -

I had to press the windows key and P key - how bloody easy is that :mad:

"I thought that you was using a POE switch for the cameras...?"

Yes I am -- Ordered it yesterday -Netgear 8 PoE switch -- 3tb WD Purple came today with the results listed in post above - not been a easy day. - Especially when you work on the poke and hope principle.

Roll on tomorrow can start afresh - might just wash the car. :D

When you get the POE switch you don't need the ports on the NVR then.
If it was a new WD Purple I would have been tempted to get a refund, replacement rather than an RMA. Then again it should be an advanced RMA, new drive sent first.

Have a break tomorrow.!

@Hamish you will get a lot of good information by reading the posts in this thread :)
I would suggest the WD Purple over the reds and you will need a LOT more storage than what you have noted for those cameras and a months worth of recordings. Again that has been covered in te last few pages, along with the utility needed to check what your capacity needs would be etc.

I did an advanced RMA as wanted it quickly.

Is it me or do you think price of cameras have rocketed --Most searches send me to Iray in China- seems price in $$ is same as prices here now in uk outlets.

IDK a DS-2CD3335-I is £56 inc shipping to the UK, to me that seems a good price. I paid more than that in 2014. You can also get a discount for numbers, but then risk customs charges.
