Spec me a CCTV System

Ahh OK yeah I was comparing to the DS-2CD2135FWD-I I you mentioned.

Where exactly are the emitters on the DS-2CD2135FWD-I I? In some (most) photos of the camera itself, it simply looks like there are no visible IR emitters which is strange?
I can't see any. I'll ask one of our installers or Hik if I get a chance :p
My dad is looking to upgrade an existing analogue 4 camera system, it's only SD and the interface is very clunky, to get the video from it I need to use an older laptop with internet explorer in compatibility mode, this isn't good going forward, most of the computers in the house are on Win 10 now.

I've done a lot of reading, Hikvision and Dahua seem to be recommended a lot. We would probably go for an 8ch NVR and add a 5th camera. But I have no idea which NVR to get and which cameras, or what resolution. I have read that turret cameras are usually recommended. I also read about buying from UK dealers, though it seems that some here haven't had a problem buying from Aliexpress.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

I would probably now advise against trying to get Hikvision as most dealers are not supposed to sell to public. I can still get my hands on them mind, but I worry that it will get to the point that you look to upgrade or replace the odd camera and getting hold of them would be difficult.

I've seen a few Dahua setups and I'd say they're equally as good as Hikvision.

Lens size and mp depend entirely on where you want them mounted, field/angle of view etc. So it may be worth trying to find out the spec of the current cameras to give something to compare to.

Dahua are great, knowledgable staff too - I spoke to one of their sales guys the other day in regards to a WiFi camera (Hik are 10 week lead times, ridiculous).

It's worth noting that Hik NVRs are ONVIF compliant, therefore any ONVIF camera will work, you may lose some features such as line crossing detection and number plate recognition but not that many people care.

Thanks! Would be great to know.

Based on your comment, am I correct in assuming that Dahua NVR's are not ONVIF compliant?

They are ONVIF compliant yes :)

I was just mentioning that not being able to add more cameras in the future to a Hik NVR wont happen because they support ONVIF Cameras.

O yeah of course I'm aware of the ONVIF (and others) being compatible with the Hikvision NVR. I'm running a 2mp Grandstream camera on mine currently, but I have to run its own motion detection alerts which are terrible and unreliable!

Mind you Hikvision seems to manage to break the motion detection email alerts on a regular basis so no difference really :D

Yeah you'll likely lose features but it'll never get to a point where you can't add new cameras to it (providing channels are available).

I might see if I can get a Dahua system to play with...

Had a search (albeit a quick one) and Dahua seem even harder for individuals in the UK to obtain than Hik! Ha

That doesn't surprise me to be fair, they are what Hik are moving into. Commercial :p

For example as a business that I work for, we would often provide part numbers and the customer would come back with "well I can buy it for £X, what's to stop me?", and then public pricing would make people fight to get lower and it's gotten out of hand as recent.

I currently have 4 Hikvision DS-2CD2342WD-I Connected to my Synology NAS running surveillance station

4 isn't enough to cover my property being Detached so have an extra 2 corners to cover.

I'm I best sticking with the models I currently have but maybe wider lens for the garden. Or is there a newer better model out there

I'd probably go with the 5MP ones now. I prefer domes personally and would be looking at the 2155's

Do domes not suffer from IR glare or spiders still. Something I only get if I park the van too close to my EXIR ones now

You'll get a slight amount of IR Glare, don't very often have issues with spiders if I'm honest - I find that more on bullets as of late, strangely. If not cleaned they do suffer at night, we recommend cleaning every 6 months on commercial premises.

It's worth noting a lot (nearly all) my experience is with commercial customers - They are targeted by a very different thief and the IK10 rating of the domes is what they like.

Don't mean to sound like a broken record, but do not buy the 5mp Hikvisions ! They have a much more narrow field of field than the 4mp cameras and are 4:3 not 16:9. You will see less than your 4mp cameras.

4mp 2.8mm lens is 108deg angle of view
5mp 2.8mm lens is 80deg (!) angle of view
8mp 2.8mm lens is 102deg angle of view

I can't even source some 4MP cameras now... Not standard older lines anyway and as I said previously, the ones that are still current lines I'm getting some ridiculous lead times on. Although to be fair I had assumed stock would be low of the ones mentioned but it isn't that bad :p

You're spot on though, you will get less of a horizontal view but I feel this is the way Hiks line is going

I won't touch the Hik 5mp cams. Utter tripe for night use unless you just want daylight surveillance. These days for best daylight/night use for the £100 mark or so is the Hik 2335 turrets. I replaced a load of 2342's for customers which again were tripe at night.

Low level light cams are a must for outdoor surveillance which the 2335's are. Phenomenal night quality. Nearly on par with the Dahua's low level light cams.

If you hunt around, there are trade people who will sell you the Hik kit at great prices.
