Spec me a CCTV System

I haven't updated any of my HIK cameras or the NVR as all I read was horror stories, people seem to have major problems or features get removed, anyone else found this? Not upgrading firmware or software goes against the normal advise for most prducts.
I did it fine without any issues. Was new to hikvision so can't comment on loss of features as I did it on day 1

With a quick Google you can see plenty of vulnerabilities so I wouldn't risk running potentially compromised firmware at all.

Hikvision h265+ cameras with a Synology and WD purple drives.

Simple, awesome and updated often.
Hey Bledd, is that using a synology nvr or nas with custom software?

I'm getting close to where I have to make a decision now, and alternatives to Ubiquiti are welcome for comparisons.

The Synology NVR1218 looks great, I take it thats just plug and play, and accessible over your network, or do you have to have a monitor attached?

Is it recomended to buy a Hikvision NVR in the UK or are they ok from aliexpress? The DS-7608NI-K2/8P from aliexpress seems to be £50 cheaper than the uk, are they any drawbacks? Also the cameras im looking at seem to be around £50 cheaper aswell. This seems to good to be true, no?

@platypus , a normal Synology NAS has an addon called 'Surveillance Station', it's very good!

There are a lot of fake/grey Hikvision, I'd use a UK supplier.

It has a desktop application that works very well, also an Android app (Synology DS Cam).

Or you could use any viewer to connect directly to the camera.

Synology is a good alternative to a dedicated NVR, beacuse you'll have network storage too (handy for backups or holding media)

It comes with 2x camera licences, additional licences are around £40 per camera.

H265+ is around 10% of the space of traditional camera storage. So you can hold a whole lot more than normal.

I don't need the network storage and can think of at least 3 places I want to put a camera so I think I'll go for the NVR as they basically come out at the same price with the additional licences.

I just need to make sure its viewable over the network is all, when you mention a desktop app can I remote into that (vnc or the like) I suppose?

Not the app itself, but I don't see why you can't remote in to the PC running the app...or simply just install the app on the PC you're doing the remoting from.. Unless I'm missing something obvious / strange in your setup?

If by the pc running the app you mean the NVR then yes it if supports that then its fine. I guess the concern was that it specifically has a hdmi port so I wanted to make sure an attached screen wasn't required. I take it I can install the Synology Surveillance app onto a Windows PC then, and connect up to the NVR that way?

Ahh now I'm with you.

I've never tried to remote into my hik NVR and don't imagine it would work.

What would work then for you is to set a password and static IP on it with a monitor, stick it in the loft and then use the client software to connect back to the NVR from another pc

Hope that makes sense :)

I thought you were trying to run the client software on one pc and then strangely remote into that pc...hence my confusion lol

Nah I was trying to come up with a way to have the NVR tucked away in a box in the garage with no local access.

If one of their NAS systems would let me set this up then it would work better so I'd reconsider that as an option, even if it will work out a little more expensive.

You can do as you say once you've ip addressed it, dhcp of course but I'd set a static before putting it in the loft.

Then you can access all the settings via either client app or Web ui ...whichever you prefer

Any reccomendations for a POE switch?

I need 8 - 12 ports, will be used primarily for hikvision 2335 cameras but also probably a couple of wireless access points, model TBC, probably ubiquity.

Its for home use.

Thanks

Any advice appreciated, I am looking to get some CCTV at least 4 cameras and would like to be good enough for night time as well as day if that is even possible, Not sure what MP to go for etc.

I am aware Hikvision seem to be the ones to go for but have also seen Hiwatch and Dahua.

Not sure on Budget as no idea :) maybe £350 to £400

Am in the same boat with roughly same budget. The house we're buying (hopefully) has been wired up for CCTV but none installed as the current owners didn't get around to buying the kit.

You just have to read through the entire 84 pages of this thread...it's what I did....honest! ;)

You'll have to up the budget a bit if you want Hik, as you'll need approximately £500 (+ a HDD at ~£100) for the NVR and 4 decent Hik cams
