Spec me a CCTV System

Thanks for response so if I up budget what sort of equipment would you recommend?
Hikvision DS-7608NI-K2-8P is the NVR I got

With a mix of DS-2CD2342WD-I and DS-2CD2335FWD-I cameras.

2342 more detailed in the day (higher MP) and still decent at night especially if there's a bit of light about already. 2335 are good in the day and pretty awesome at night as they're designed for ultra low light

Without sounding blunt, it is all in this thread and reading back even just the most recent 10 pages or so will probably be beneficial as there's some good stuff there on selecting lens size etc :)

Instead of the 2342 cams, purchase the 2355 or the 2385 if you prefer daytime recording over night and the 2335 if you prefer night recording as a bigger priority. The 2342 cam is an older EasyIP 2.0 H.264. The 2335, 2355 and 2385 cams are EasyIP 3.0 H.265, the newer generation of cams.

Good point. Shame I only found out about the 2385 after I purchased 2342, they seem a fairly good bargain compared to the 2355 - both of which are a fair bit over the 2342 now but I guess they have reasons / benefits to warrant the cost

I bought a YI camera for £20 yes you heard that right £20 and it can take a micro sd, has cloud functionality for cheap and a phone app for alerts and logging in. It's 720p model but looks good enough for internal use. Going to get 2 x 1080p versions and point them out front windows upstairs for external use but cameras inside the house on window ledges. Stick two or three 720p downstairs internally for inside use.

I got one as well in the lighting deals the other day

theres tons of cheap Chinese models out there but this one seem really good...and more importantly the android app is easy and reliable

I think Xiaomi actually own them...so its not a small operation..they also do dash cams and sports cameras..so not a 2 man operation from a shed somewhere

yeah i already own 2 of there dash cams. got a 4 or 2k one for the wifes car and a 1080p one for mine. think they were both stupidly cheap too. was christmas deals on them

Managed to grab one of Yi cameras too. Was only going to use it as a baby cam but now thinking of using them as CCTV rather than dedicated system. Anyone using the Yi Cloud service?

they have a different cam today for 23.99 using an 11 quid off voucher. i ordered one on my main account then on my second and then another on a mates account.

so now i will have 4. wish i had ordered another 2 when the other one went on sale but i'll wait for possibly another deal popping up on the 1080p models within the next day or two.

I am looking to setup some CCTV around the exterior of my house (probably just 2 cameras) but also need a NAS for file storage. Looks like i can combine the 2 reading this. Any recommendations for a budget of £400-500

Edit:

I would be using Powerline adaptors for LAN access in the garage so don't think the NAS option will work if the cameras require PoE as well.

I've be looking at these instead:

So this weekend I'm going to install the below in my bungalow as the wife had her car broken into the other week and the inlaws live in an annex at the end of the property

  • 2 x Hikvision DS-2CD2122FWD-1
  • 2 x Qvis EYE-4MP-FW
  • DVR (2TB Harddrive)
  • POE 4 port network box
A friend who works in the CCTV business has helped me get the above together and I have a reel of CAT5e (external use) cable, crimping tool and RJ45 connector plugs

Been watching a few videos on installation & setup but had a though this morning about how I will attach the cameras to the soffits as they are 3-5mm plastic, should I be using self tapping screws?

And any other tips that might help, like connecting all the cameras before hand to test (they are new though) that sort of thing

Thanks Mart

Just screw the cams directly under the soffit. If you don’t have a junction box with the cams to contain the cable, then you better chose your location and drill a 25mm hole through the pvc and timber and hide cable inside the soffit.

So I've spent 6 hours pulling 4 cables in my bungalow loft space, the pitch of the roof made it a difficult job along with all the insulation floating about (I had a mask on) a friend of mine terminated all the cables x8 and I've pulled them all into the location inside where the Poe switch and DVR will be located next to the internet router, tomorrow I'm going to connect the cameras and setup the DVR and app on my phone... That's the fun part!! :) Now I'm having a well deserved glass of red.....
