Spec me a CCTV System

does an NVR need to be plugged directly into each camera or can i put a switch in the middle to reduce my cable runs?
I think they only expect one camera coming in on each interface (not a whole bunch down one cable), partially for bandwidth reasons also... But keen to see if anyone knows the answer to this as I was talking about it with someone the other day who wanted to do as you're planning

You can’t go NVR > Switch > Camera nope, the rear ports aren’t a switch it’s slightly more complex than that.

You can however put a switch in the cable run, put that switch back to your router and assign the cameras an IP address outside of DHCP Scope (or static map). You can then manually add these IP addressss to the NVR on the channels you desire

Cool, so say for simplicity sake we have a router with 6 PoE switch ports. You can plug cameras in 1 - 5 (static IP them with a different range) and then run port 6 to the NVR and that would work? You just add those static IPs on the NVR?

Yes.
You then just manually add the IP address of each cam into the NVR. Remember an 8 port NVR can still only use 8 cams even if you only use the NVR’s LAN port and non of the 8 poe ports of the NVR.

Yup, so lets say 192.168.0.1 is your home network, and your NVRs inside interface issues IPs on the 192.168.255.1/24 subnet.

You can put some camera into the NVR which will be given IPs on the inside interface, so for exampme 192.168.255.5. You can then plug three cameras into a switch on your home network and issue them IP Address 192.168.0.250, 192.168.0.251, 192.168.0.252.

Then go to your NVR, Configuration > Camera Management. Select a channel that is empty and vacant, select modiy and then change the adding method to manual, tap in the cameras IP Address, user and pass (I always make this the same as the NVR for sanitys sake) and hit OK.

another question - on the hikvision cameras they provide a power and a ethernet port - only the ethernet port is waterproofed - what are you supposed to do with the power if your using PoE, just tape it up?

Yes.

That's quite cool, thank you both for the explanations! :)

NVR think I am going to go for Hikvision DS-7616NI-K2-16P
Then Hikvision DS-2CD2335FWD-I turret to start with (maybe Grey).

Has anyone had any luck getting grey versions of Hikvision cameras from Ali express or is it safer to stick with white?
