Insuring a 2.5 V6 at 18 isnt particularly fun

Depends a lot on the car, Jez insured a 2.5 V6 at 17iirc. Anyway, you don't "have" to get a 2.5 V6 406 Coupe, the 2.2HDi is the only other engine worth having though.

I had a 3.0l Omega at 18, £1000 TPFT :).

I can't imagine a 406 Coupe or a Cougar being too hideous to insure and both were available with 2.0l 4cylinder engines.

For 3 grand he wont get an HDi but the 2.0 16v isnt THAT bad.

2.0 petrol is fine.

2.2 petrol might be an option... but seriously, if you aint fussed about performance then the 2.0 is adequate.

With out the wheels of course

It looks as though it belongs in a scrap yard :/ Banger++

Just my opinion, but i am not seeing how something as awful looking as that could be regarded as anything else.

I'm in a similar position to the OP.

I've been toying with the idea of selling my 306 (p reg TD) when I've been driving for a year (and 21 yo) in sept and getting a 406 coupe. I love the look of the car, always have done. I was surprised how cheap they are when looking  . The only thing that worries me is the reliability, how bad would you expect it to be to run. I can afford to lay out the extra £1500 on top of the sale of my 306 for a £3K example, but being a student don’t want to be paying mega bills all the time. I know MPG will probably be half, but I don’t see that as a big problem, its just repairs that worry me. I'm not fussed about it being a boring driver either, I'm used to driving a 306 diesel (with screw mod ;) though so its quite "nippy" ;) ).

So my vote would be the 406 coupe 2.0

But whats reliability going to be like compared with my 306

Also I'm thinking this might be a gooden as I have a feeling (usually wrong) that unlike other larger cars depreciation might be low, because of the looks and desirability? But on the other hand high IG might put people off, what do you think?

Well its under £3k now and it cost well over £20k new, do the maths. But it hasnt really got anywhere to go, buy it, keep it 2 years and throw it in the bin and its cost you £1500 a year in depreciation, less than most nearly new stuff.

It's the V6's with the enormous running costs.

Ok, fair play. Whats it likly to cost to run in the two years, lots or sim to my 306? You say its only the V6 with large running costs, so I "should" be ok with the 2.0. I though it was strange that these have been labled with such poor reliability when I asume most if not all apart from cosmetic parts are from the std 406, a car with afaik have very good reiability.

Helluva lot more so than a hyundai coupe though you have to agree. Very good performance by all accounts too.
I don't know what you mean by that. Are you saying the Fiat Coupe looks better than the Hyundai Coupe?

I think you'll find me very hard to persuade in that case. The Fiat Coupe is, IMO, one of the ugliest things I've ever seen.

[edit]There appears to be more than one person in this thread trying to say the mk1 MR2 looks better than the mk2. Tell me, is this insanity contagious? I wouldn't want to catch it!

I suppose it is a bit like marmite on that front, but I'd sooner have the Fiat than the hyundai.

I think the 406 has to be the bast car suggested here, except perhaps an MR2 (not the MK1, too many sheddy ones about).

406 'best' in what context, looks wise probably yes, speed god no, the 2l is slow, even the 3l v6 aint exactly speedy...

I personally like the looks of the mk1 mr2, and don't particularly like the mk2 looks wise, but thats my opinion and it's clear to see that in terms of general consensus the mk2 is 'better looking' than the mk1, if that makes any sense...

The mk1 has an aqquired taste. :p

Well, if we're talking about cars as old as a Mk1 MR2, then I may as well throw this into the equation. 3K will pick you up a 16v with under 100k on the clock. Plus you wont have to worry about depreciation.

Well I've just test driven a Puma, which the missus wants me to get and my mate from work tells me is the best coupe for under £20k and I think I'm in love with the thing! :D
