Spec me a dehumidifier please?

I've sort of said that wrong. We went from crappy inefficient incandescent bulbs to super efficient LEDs for light.

Yet we've stuck with the same way of generating heat by sending electric through a heating element since forever.

We need mini non meltdown nuclear thermal generating radiators. Or something similar :D
You think you'll get better than 99% efficiency? Which electric already is.

My heat pump is 300%+ efficient using the same electricity! It depends how you use it.

Anyway, due to drying more clothes indoors (to avoid the dryer) humidity has hit my list of concerns. It’s not something I’ve really considered previously.

What % do you start to get concerned? And what do those of you with dehumidifiers target?

I’ve noticed ours creeping up to 75% post morning showers, which is causing condensation on a few more windows than usual, but I don’t know whether I should otherwise be concerned. We have air con so I ran that on the dehumidifier setting and it gets down to 60% in a couple of hours, but it chills the rooms slightly as it’s essentially just bringing its coils below the dew point and dumping the heat outside. Whilst the air con doesn’t use much electricity ticking over in that mode, we then need the heating on to bring the rooms back up - In the current environment I’m loathe to be heating and cooling the same rooms… but perhaps that’s still less energy than the dryer, I’ll need to run the numbers and also compare to buying a standalone unit. But first I need to work out if we should really worry! Ventilation hasn’t been helping as with all the rain recently it’s higher outside.

Its not great to have it above 70% for long. 55% is ideal from memory.

That's what I keep seeing too, 70 percent or above has the potential to cause condensation problems. If it's on your Windows then just wipe them down with a tissue and stick it down the toilet. Don't use a towel as that will just dry and dump the water back in the air as moisture! :D

I've seen loads of threads on sites where people are alarmed there's moisture on the windows. NO, I'd say that's good because if it's not on the windows then it could be on the walls, which you definitely don't want!

You could have no condensation at all but in single brick or old houses, it's either on the windows or the walls! :(

I bought a window vac a couple of weeks back. It was sucking a good 50 ml off the windows each morning. We're now not getting any window condensation but humidity on the gauge is still up at 80% last couple of days and won't come down.

There doesn't seem to be any wetness feeling in the house but we do notice a musty smell when humidity touches 80%.

Don't forget it's temperature dependent 80% could well be 55% by the time you warm the room up a bit.
80% at 20c would be bad though.

Yeah so yesterday after the rains we were up at 80% at around 18 degrees. After heating to 21 degrees we only dropped to low 70's %.

It doesn't feel wet though, in the room, that's what I don't get.

The Ebac is more powerful but twice the cost of the Meaco. I have that Meaco and it's a good small unit and I've also owned Ebac in the past, but they've always been more expensive.
I think the Meaco might be too small the EcoAir I have now doesn't do a very good job Windows still get a lot of condensation. Plus it's using double the power at around 348w to do 7lt Vs the Ebac at 148w for 21l.
The made for the UK seems perfect as well genuinely made to be left on 24/7.

You've answered your own question.:D

Trying to work out which of Arete 20/ 25 vs Zambesi would be best...
I have electricity on Octopus Go with 5 hours off-peak at 7.5p/kWh, peak is 34p.

Was thinking I leave dehumidifier in hall downstairs and run it as hard as it can during off peak. Hoping it will still be quite enough- one door/wall , around 5 - 8 metres away from bed.
I was thinking Arete, but not sure if it would work with a timer switch and this thread has got me thinking a Zambesi might work better for me. Hall temp sits around 15-18 with thermostats set in living areas at 18.5. Hall could be lower at night at winter moves in but probablly not getting much below 10 - 12.

Would this work with the humidity balancing throughout house when I open doors next day, or is it best as Meaco suggest to run them all the time? They don't mention or seem to factor off peak...
The house isn't damp/ mouldy- new build from 2001. Just the RH is sitting high at 70+ with windows closed and weather...

Any thoughts on compressor vs desicant?

Picked up the Ebac 2250e today and switched it on. Its really quite noisy, louder than I was expecting. The soft sound of air whooshing from the fan is fine, no problem with that, its the quite high pitched buzzing from the compressor that is noisy.

Is it continuous or does it switch on and off like a fridge does? I would say this unit is louder than the fridge freezer is for sure.

Been running an Ebac dehumidifier for years now to keep the humidity down in the bathroom and prevent mould (can't remember the model)
I've had no issues with it and would buy another if this one died.
I put it on a mat to dampen the noise from the compressor.
