Spec me an LED Torch

What would make a good replacement for an Ultrafire WF-501B (supposedly 1000 lumens)?

Looking for something:
- No bigger than 180mm (L) x 40mm (dia)
- Runs off commonly available rechargables (18650, perhaps)
- Insane output on highest power
- Several hours battery life on low, with enough output to light up a small room... say, 10 lumens min?

Ideally with a tail switch and micro USB recharging too, but not essential.
I'd love something like a Nitecore TM26, but that's a bit too bulky!

I ended up buying a PD35 Tac, it's absolutely brilliant. Runs off 1 18650 and has very good battery life on all the settings. It's well built and fits nice in the hand.

Recently bought This for the dog walks/home. i've had several ultra fire ones but while decent enough quality many of them had the switches fail. And the 5 modes were extremely annoying.

Really great quality, Great warranty. Best feature for me is press for boost mode, means no mode switching. Can just half press the button, on comes boost power to quickly locate the dogs and or the ball. And obviously low-high mode for around the house etc. Only stated as 320 lumens but is easily brighter than my older supposed "800+" ultra fires. Easily enough to see a few hundred or so metres into the distance.

Also bought these, great 800mah batteries. Using around 50mah each a walk so last a good amount of time before having to recharge.

The Lumintop Prince (Rose gold copper + Carbon fibre) arrived today. What a beauty it is. I've had some expensive torches over the years, and none of them can top this one for fit and finish. Everything is superbly crafted, from the threading to the weight and feel of the stainless steel button cap.

I've read the patina on this will be pretty damn sweet, so am looking forward to that as time goes on

Bargain for £26, especially given it's a well regulated 3 mode 1000lm XM-L2 U2! This and the 900lm SolarForce L2 SS with proper moon mode will be my two torches now, think I'll shift the BLF on as I won't have a need for it any more.

Check it out:

There isn't an annoying yellow tint to the hotspot either, it's not as neutral white as the flood surround, but it's well controlled. Certainly not as yellow as other XM-L emitters I've bought before for other torches.

Can anyone suggest a decent quality 14500 x 1 torch that has a simple single mode on/off? I am getting frustrated with my Fenix LD that I have to cycle through modes.
I just want max lumens at the first press with no fancy modes.

Any light with a decent emitter will have a memory function, so it will always remember the last used mode. Sounds like the Fenix is a model where they didn't feel it was a feature worth putting in for whatever reason (probably so they can charge more for one that does!).

The difference in tint between the BLF A6 (Neutral white!) and the Lumintop is huge.

The BLF is quite clearly brighter at 1600lm, but the side by side yellow tint is now off putting lol.

Astrolux S1 (18650 or 18350)
Xenos E03 Neutral White (AA or 14500)
Lumintop Tool AAA (x2)
Astrolux M02 rechargeable keychain light

Can anyone recommend anything better than This with a similar feature set for around the same price? Ideally looking for something small with a long throw.

It will be a gift so the gift box is quite a draw but if there is something better out there I would be interested.

Picked up the new Nitecore i4 which claims double the charging speed of the old one an intelligent charging distribution based on what's already charged among other things.

Seems very good so far.

I've got a couple of cheap 18650/Cree torches for various purposes but they all drive me nuts due to having to push the sodding button ten times to get visible light.

What I want is a slider switch or rotating bezel switch to select the mode.

What drives me nuts is having to cycle through...
1. AAAgghrr! Need Sunglasses!
2. Might as well eat more carrots!
3. Might as well use a Ouija Board!
4. Epilepsy #1
5. Epilepsy #2
... each time I turn it on to get back to #1. AAAgghrr! Need Sunglasses! (Which is what I want. Quality batteries + good LED(s) = happiness. And not crashing into stuff in the dark.)

They are all great when I get to #1. Sometimes I need #1 in a hurry.

Please send help. "Tactical Crenellated Strike Bezel" optional. If I can see 'em, I can deal with 'em. :)

Bonus points and free novelty toy for speccing a model that has exactly two options: FULL POWER and OFF.

Are you touching the button too hard when you turn it off?
I had this problem with one torch and then I used a lighter touch.

Just tested and you're right, a half-touch works on the big 3x18650 one, thank you! :)

Nevertheless, when wearing gloves in winter and in a hurry, I'd still like FULL POWER or OFF without having to think about it.

edit: smaller ones all still crap, half-touch or full click. :/

I'm so demanding I know... :p

Hi,

Any recommendations for a torch that meets these requirements. (In no particular order, but all must be met)

#1 Comes in a nice rigid (Ideally Alloy) presentation case. (It is a present)
#2 Rechargeable
#3 Nice and bright (with the usual options)
#4 Compact (Needs to be suitable for putting in a small handbag and used by somebody with small hands)
#5 Must be a nice solid quality item capable of many years service.

I wont say "Money no object" but I am not saying "No more than £20" either. I am willing to pay the right price for a quality item
