Spec me an LED Torch

you probably want this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UltraFire...6332590?pt=US_Flashlights&hash=item415dc911ae

It's the same length but the head is a lot wider, the benefit of that is much better throw.
Also, due to the design of that light, the thermal path between the LED and the body is much better for greater brightness and longer LED lifespan :)

Even though the C8 has a big head (lol) it is still very pocketable, speaking from experience!

nice thanks gents
that'll be the one about £20 I can afford to spend that much

can anyone point me in the direction of a cheap red LED torch for looking in my fish tank at night?

the critters and crabs dont notice the red light and continue about their business, so i can watch properly :)

yes we could all do with some of that! :)

managed to aquire my first laptop battery (HP circa 2009) out of the battery bin at work today  which i have pulled apart and now testing 6 x lilac coloured 18650 samsung branded cells....hopefully will be some keepers!

Nice, good luck with them. I have 4 good ones so far out of 6 tested of the ones I got from works battery recycle box.

You can get red filters for the Fenix torches. Not sure about the cheap ones.

Or something like this : http://www.solarforce-sales.com/product_detail.php?t=FA&s=27&id=218

Fits all flashlights with 30 - 32mm bezels.

the first set i tried got a bit warm and charged to 4.16v will test again after 24 hours to check volt drop (per amigafan2003's advice**)

**Any battery that comes out of the pack > 3.7v, put it on charge (supervised) and any that charge to >4.1 and don't get hot doing so, set aside. Any that are already <3.7v, get hot or don't get to 4.1v - bin them (well recycle them actually).

The ones that seem ok, store them in a normal room temp environment for 24 hrs and test the voltage again - any that show less that a 0.05v drop after 24hrs are good and keep them - if any sag by more than 0.05v bin them (e.g. 4.11v then 4.05v after 24hrs = bin).

Oh, and don't blow yourself yup when dismatling the pack!

I'm after a cheap beast of a torch, are the battieries/charger that come with the one everyone keeps posting actually any good?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UltraFire...6332590?pt=US_Flashlights&hash=item415dc911ae

It looks great, but i don't want to be in the situation where i have two batteries and a charger that are of no use. Also, would it be portable enough to fit on the front of my bike, or would i be mental to try and hook that thing up?

that's prob the one I will get

I bet if we trawl through these posts we'll see what people think of it

I've had a quick look but sadly haven't found any mention of the batteries, torch sounds amazing though.

true point - the batteries well tbh as long as they work I'd be happy with them
I'm not going to be hammering the torch every night - I'd just be worried about how long they will stay charged if that makes sense

Yup

Obviously its rare, but shows the importance of not charging a battery unattended and checking the voltage before using it.

The battery was a "UltraFire Protected 18650 3.7V 3000mAh Lithium Batteries" from dx

These 18650s are looking far too scary for my likings! I like to leave my batteries charging as i go to work, so for the sake of my sanity i think i might stick with my L2D for now, not exactly bright but its hassle free.
