Spec me an LED Torch

So you got to check the voltage every time after a charge?

With cheap cells and chargers, yes definitely.

The WF-139 chargers and other cheap chargers don't terminate charging completely so leaving the cells in for prolonged periods after they've finished is very dangerous.

the Xtar WP2 II is completely safe in this regard.

okay so if you leave the batteries charging for 1 or 2 hours you should be okay?

surely it is common sense not to charge these things overnight or for very very long periods that is just asking for trouble

Depends on the charger. some chargers trickle charge the cells at high enough currents that I would advise removing the cells within 10 minutes of the charge finishing, sooner the better.

On the other hand, i'd be happy leaving The Xtar WP2 II alone for an entire week.

These 18650s are looking far too scary for my likings! I like to leave my batteries charging as i go to work, so for the sake of my sanity i think i might stick with my L2D for now, not exactly bright but its hassle free.

If you get a decent charger and some decent protected cells you will be fine, but I know what you mean.

My LD20 never gets used any more, now that I have 18650 torches.

I just specced up the torch with your recommended charger and some batteries recommended previously. I would feel safe buying those, but sadly the combined price is just too much at the moment. Maybe after the christmas present buying season has passed...

I personally would also assume the batteries are counterfeit, or am i being too wary?

The "Ultrafire Blues" are okay, not terrible but not great either.

There isn't really any such thing as "real" and "fake" ultra/super/spider/trust-fire cells, they all get their bare 18650's from the same dodgy chinese distributors/suppliers.

They're unlikely to be clapped out reclaimed laptop cells like the Ultrafire 3000mAh's though.

Isn't this the same torch but without the crappy batteries and charger? Its only £13.88, which leaves some money to get the Xtar charger @ £12, then get some decent cells.

Will work out a little more expensive, but at least you're getting good quality charger and cells.

Yes it is, and that's a much better choice :)

Thanks for the advice gents, i'll likely be going for this combo after xmas:

Works out at roughly £40, which is more than i want to spend at the moment, but i imagine a bargain assuming it really is 5x brighter than my L2D

Don't get the torch from that seller.

I got one last month and the quality was very poor.

The reflector does not fit, the glass is too thin so it shakes about, the switch also seems poor quality.

Is that not the smaller head? Which results in it being 1k lumens instead of 1.3k?

Or is the one i posted just fibbing?

Nah they're the same torch. neither of them will actually do 1300 lumens, probably more like 650 to 700.

That's down to Ultrafire and China's terrible quality control rather than the seller.

You could look at it another, way bad batch and the seller has the lot, so are more likely to get one.

I've just bought that combo! Got the touch itself from the slightly cheaper one though. Will report back when it arrives... that's the only bad thing about ordering from China, it takes FOREVER!!! :p

I believe it was caused by a few factors.

1) The flashlight was a multiple cell flashlight. It had 3 18650 batteries I believe. The user did not check that the batteries had the same voltage before use. Bad idea!
2) The cells had been over-discharged. Bad idea!
3) The cells had been left on charge overnight and most likely were over charged. Bad idea!

I'll still check mine :D Better safe than sorry
