Spec me an LED Torch

Already got a solarforce masterpiece pro-1 so have the batteries and charger. :)

Wish I could find some beamshot comparisons between the linked above and my masterpiece

Mines come loose once but I think that was down to bad handlebar positioning. The one in my helmet has been rock solid.

Duct tape is always an option.

i'm such a plonker
i looked again at the way i had it mounted and i must have put it on upside down with the smaller C shape on the handlebars and the larger C holding the torch. which is why it kept going loose....

reversed it and did 22 miles this afternoon over my usual tarmac/bumpy stuff and it was solid.

mini review ultrafire-mcuc9s-r5 285lumen (14500/AA)

With all the talk on this thread of 18650's I thought would do a mini 'dashboard' review on my 14500 torch :)

I purchased this torch for work use with the proviso that it was small and light enough to attach to my keyring. This way I am always with a torch as it is suprising how many journeys this has saved me going 'back to the van' :)

I wanted lightweight (50g) aluminium finish this time, as my previous AA torch's black finish wore away being in constant contact with the keys. This torch will hold both 14500 and AA which is quite versatile. But I will permanently use 14500 for this torch with a spare Xtarwp2 charger in the van.

The mcuc9c is 3 mode hi, lo, strobe with memory. The strobe is very annoying and I will be avoiding strobe for any future torches...maybe i'm getting old :p. The XP-G R5 emitter sits within an alloy smooth reflector (excuse fingers!) with a glass lens and glow ring spacer.

Packs a punch for such a small torch and has proven very handy with use every day. I purchased this torch without reading reviews as it was a new product on manafonts website which ticked a few boxes and was added on a whim to a large order of cells, charger and ultrafire UF-980L

My main concern so far (apart from the 3 mode) is the quality of the bodies 'aluminium' finish which has already received a few dents after being dropped and I expect to be replacing this torch perhaps in 1 years time (if not before)

In the meantime I will continue to enjoy using this torch as it's size makes it so versatile to be always with me should i need it.

How would this compare to the Ultrafire C8?

I fancy an XM-L torch too, even though my ShiningBeam S-mini XP-G R5 hasn't arrived yet :p

quite favourably in terms of build quality and such, but poorly in terms of throw. the C8 has a much wider and deeper reflector which is important to throw.

If you want something that will withstand key carriage, then you really want something made of stainless steel like this:

Titanium would also be good, but *expensive*. :(

106 g !!....... that's over twice the weight . Yes titanium will be too expensive for a work torch but how about aircraft grade alu?

There's no such thing as "Aircraft grade aluminium"

There's just grades of aluminium. most cheap torches use cheap low grades of aluminium which dent very easily (which causes finish to chip) but aluminium anodizing wears quite easily anyway

Even my very expensive Surefires, which have 7075-T6 high-end Aluminium and are regarded to have the best anodizing going will suffer finish damage at the hands of keys and daily pocket carry.

Have read this thread a few times just out of interest.

However i could do with a basic torch for odd jobs, esp in the loft when i have the electricity off - I'm not looking to light up the whole loft but just what i am working on (usually electric junction boxes etc)

Ideally i would like something quite small so i can carry it around easily, something that lasts a fair while - AA or Li-on but i have no idea what i should buy.

Is there a easy product you guys can recommend?
