Speedlink Medusa 5.1 Headset Owners' Thread

Hmm, ive got an Asus A8N Sli Premium, with onboard 8 channel audio. Ive been using my medusas on that. But i got some speakers coming soon, so i might steal out my dads pc the audigy 2ZS...i'll try to remember to come back and tell you about the improvements if any.... :p

I've got a pair of these and have had them months, I love them, very comfy and playing CSS and BF2 is great, you have to adjust the front/rear balance to suit yourself. I know have a xfi and they sound even better :)

for surround gaming without disturbing anyone they are great. For music I use the DVD/CD switch to switch to stereo sound.

I cannot see how anybody say they are not loud enough? With the PC Volume, amp volume and in line volume settings you can get the volume and balance pretty damn as you likel. If you think they are left/right biased, then do what I did. Set you PC sound settings to 5.1 speakers and use the speaker settings app to balance them. The creative one is excellent for that.

For the money they do they job excellently IMO, better than my Plantronic 90's for gaming for sure.

I can hear a decent amount more compared to my friends headsets on CS which is nice.

They are like " How did you know he was coming?" - "medusa 5.1s :P"

Unfortunately my left speaker(s) is/are a lot quieter than the right, if I tap the volume control that comes attached then it starts to change but its never constant.

my left speaker seems louder :( but ive never tried tapping haha

Can anyone point me in the right direction for a company that stocks the single user non USB version of these headphones?

OCers don't do them, I ordered from an online company on sept 1 who were expecting stock on sept 14 which now seems to have changed to Oct 20th.

the usual suspects don't seem to do them - help!!!! :D

Isn't this what you are after, from the OCUK website:
SpeedLink Medusa SL-8790 5.1 Surround Headset (SP-000-RA)
Price: £30.95 (£36.37 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Got mine finally and I'm pretty impressed so far. They're certainly better than the awful Zalman 5.1s I owned. For listenning to music they don't have the sound quality of expensive headphones of course, but you wouldn't expect that for £40, especially when you consider that £40 has to stretch to 6 speakers, mic, amp and adaptor. They're not terrible for music though, some music sounds pretty decent.

There isn't a huge amount of seperation between fronts and rears, but I pretty much expected that. Certainly the sound quality overall is good enough to game with.

I think someone here commented on them hissing. You can get rid of that by turning the volume on the headphones themselves (the inline volume control) down and the volume up on either your soundcard or the amp. You should be able to pretty much illiminate the hiss with that.

I'll give them a proper try with some DVDs and Doom 3 tonight.

I felt the same way about listening to music through them until I tried a 5.1 AC3 Music DVD. Woah, I was blown away. The rumble of the subwoofer is incredible.

Unfortunately normal two-channel music doesn't utilise the subwoofer and remaining speakers unless you've set up a Low Frequence Crossover and Channel Clone in your sound properties.

I've got an nForce 2 Chipset and the Soundforce system has some great surround sound options, now all sound output uses the subwoofer and rear speakers, it sounds beautiful - even moreso to think I spent a grand total of £40 on it.

I was using the 'stereo surround' CMSS 3D effect on my Audigy 2, which copies stereo music to all channels, so it was using all 6 speakers. Sounds like there's plenty of bass too, so the CMSS 3D must take care of that. The way the bass shakes in the Matrix dvd is awesome

I'm not saying music sounds bad, but it's not as good as dedicated stereo headphones. The tone is a bit off possibly because the mids are a bit lacking. The top end detail is a bit lacking too.

For gaming though, which is what I got them for, none of that really matters.

Right, had a good test with them now, and I think they are fantastic for games and DVDs.

Fellowship of the Ring was really excellent, I love the deep boomy bass which sets the whole headphones (and your head) shaking  I also had a long play on Thief with them to test the surround sound and it's surprisingly good for headphones. Doom 3 is great with them too, scares the crap out of me even more than before :D The thud on the machine gun and plasma rifle is awesome.

Some other things I like about them is how easy they are to leave setup. Switching between speakers and headphones is no more complicated than turning speakers off and turning the headphone amp on (and vice versa to change back). No changing leads at all. Headphone amp doesn't need to be on when you're using speakers btw.

So, with the exception of music performance not quite being as good as stereo headphones, I'd definitely recommend these Medusas, especially for DVDs and surround gaming. If you want surround gaming late at night without waking the neighbours, these fit the bill very nicely.

fish99 I totally agree, I tested them with the LoTR's as well as Doom3, CS:S and Bf2 and in those situations I prefer them to stereo headphones.

Mine arrived with one of the speaker covers off. Awkward to get back on but it only took a few minutes.

If you mean the front channel is proper distorted, then they could be faulty, or maybe your soundcard is amplifying the front left/right channel. Try swapping the front and centre input on the back of the amp and see if the distortion moves with the signal.

If you just mean there's noise on the front channel, then you need to turn down the volume on the inline volume control, and turn up the volume on the amp to compensate.
