***SPOILERS*** Football 11th-13th Dec '10

Jeez.

The fact that Bale wouldn't have got the ball is completely relevant when determining whether Essien should have been sent off. It wasn't a goalscoring opportunity because Bale wouldn't have even kept the ball in play, so it wasn't worth a red.

The fact that Ramires wouldn't have got the ball has no relevance at all and was a stonewall penalty.

Whether you said what you did in isolation or whether you said it in response to R5Rich, your post still doesn't make sense.
Ok I'll spell it out for you...

5Rich was saying the Bale/Essien wasn't a foul because Bale couldn't get to the ball. Yet in the very next sentence it's a stonewall penalty, yet the ball was gone. You can't have it both ways... does it matter the fouled player has the ball or not?

A foul is a foul no? I wasn't arguing the penalty, just we should have had a free-kick moments before they got theirs... do you see?

Despite Chelsea completely dominating the second half you're all nominating Tottenham players as MOTM? (Probably because you're all spurs fans...) I fully understand a defender being in contention for man of the match but Chelsea were so dominant in the second half that I can't really see how anyone in a white shirt could be awarded it.

I mean Spurs MOTM.

Chelsea's for me was Essien.

Where does he say it wasn't a foul?

Reading the post you quouted again, he appears to be commenting on the suggestion that Essien should have been sent off for that challenge (and 2 others).

If you said what you did based on him saying it wasn't a foul then fair enough, but that's not how his post read to me.

Essien was on a yellow, if that challenge on Bale was a foul then he has to be yellow carded and that means red.

It's debatable that it deserved a yellow seeing as he didn't dive in, it wasn't dangerous nor did he intentionally break up an attack (as the ball was going out of play ;)) but I can't be bothered going around in circles anymore.

No idea... seems to be a bit of a competition to see just how inept a ref can be during a Spurs game this season. Though I think the one in charge of our FC Twente game is still in pole position.

Didn't see the Twente game but he couldn't have been as bad as Atkinson vs us the other week ;)

And yea, Essien should have gone; for the first half tackle on Bale alone. No idea how he gets away with tackles like that; the way he raises his leg like that and stamps down on players is so obvious but that's at least the 3rd time I can remember him getting away with it.

They may have dominated play the 2nd half - but thats usually when a defender wins MotM unless a striker takes command and scores a couple - apart from the goal, and probably 1 other shot I don't believe Chelsea created a lot for all their dominating.

Ekottu was impressive, as was Ferraira for Chelsea, I would say they were the best two players on display.

Firstly JT was absolutely solid at the back, he made ONE bad pass near the end after he'd run the length of the pitch, not received the ball and was giving up and walking back, his lay off to the wing wasn't fantastic but there wasn't much else he could do with it.

Agree, Terry was superb today and started a large number of Chelsea's attack, specifically for me was in the first half when he started a move by striding from the back, and was also the only player in the box when the cross come in.

As for the penalties, are we talking about Essien should have been sent off for fouling Bale near the end? Seriously, watch it again Bale just does a Gerrard, rather than plant his right foot, he just picks it up, its a dive and not the first he did all game. Bale had a rubbish game, delivery was generally miles past the goal, runs predictable and spent most of the game failing to get by one of the leagues slower and also one of the worst right backs.

Bale's wasn't in the area but was a foul and would have been a 2nd yellow card. It is irrelevant where the ball was going, a foul is a foul. Bale didn't have a particularly good game, but did take a handful of scything challenges which probably stopped him doing so. Still, no player can be perfect every game.

The essien shin incident, not pretty, certainly not intentional and Bale made a meal of it, for 4 seconds he acted like his leg was broken, and when the card didn't come out he forgot about his shin and started yelling at the ref, got up, went off, came on, no sign of even a limp IIRC.

Pav as I said got "revenge" on Essien by trying to stamp on the back of his legs, half way up his shin, with his studs, that was the only should have been straight red in the game.

Up until this point I was impressed with your comments, Essien was lucky to get away without a red card, Bale was injured, impact injuries hurt a lot, but hey, I guess as an Arsenal fan, unless the lad comes off with a broken leg it isn't a foul. Pav's was nothing in comparison, hence why he wasn't even spoken to by the referee.

Palacios also went down a bunch of times in the second half looking like he'd broken his leg, then was fine a minute later, several players kept going down, seemed to be Spurs thinking they had to hold up for a draw at that point.

Watch the tackles again, especially the one by Cole in the box which as Palacios was going down Cole pretty much swipes at his legs. It takes a lot to keep Wilson down.

Also, quite a rich comment coming from an Arsenal fan really commenting about how players from opposing sides go down, roll around etc...

Have a look in the CL thread from the other night... here's a few comments

The ref in the Spurs' game is a moron. Deffo not Champs League quality.
lol this referee needs the sack!
referee is a liability
The referee has been awful and is causing more problems

MW
Don't think that the ref can be in charge of a Champions league game for a long time to come.
This ref is PATHETIC
You get the gist ;)

Just watching MOTD2, Why on earth did Liverpool let Carroll have so much time on the ball for that 3rd goal? good goal though.
We've done it all season away from home. We allow our opponents to dominate the ball and we stand off them when they have it. Why Hodgson has got the team playing like that I've got no idea but this is all down to him.
