** SSD MEGA TEST ** Want to know whats best for you? Look inside!! UPDATE 14/02/2012

So which of of three should I get:
- 128 Crucial M4
- 128 Corsair Performance Pro
- 120 Intel 520

I do play games, but I'm using other hdd for steam folder and some apps i.e. adobe cs.

If you can afford any of those, I would personally go with the Intel one. :)

I have the Intel 510 series and it works brilliantly, I can only imagine the 520 is just even better!

I'd recommend the Crucial M4 on performance and price.

Or if price isn't an issue then also look at the Intel 520 series and the Samsung 830 series.

Price isn't an issue, but what about Intel switching to SandForce controller? I did have OCZ Vertex 2 90GB. It was quick, but my mate got now Corsair GT and is A LOT quicker than vertex. So when I saw above test, I did choose those three drives.

I'm also looking in to an SSD purchase, but can't seem to decide between:

Intel 520 120gb
M4 128gb

Does the 520 warrant the extra £30? I'm also not massively clued up, but is the SandForce controller in the 520 something to worry about?

I am mainly MMOing: Tera Beta, GW2 (when opened), Rift. I also use a few Adobe CS programs; Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign. I also run Ableton Live and (too many) VSTs.

I would go for the Intel drive as they are very reliable. Also after installing a 520 120gb one recently, I can honestly say the difference between a HDD & the 520 surpassed expectations. especially playing Battlefield 3 where it has eliminated performance issues.

Many thanks for the advice. Now added to my cart ready to purchase next week :)

I've got it finally Intel 520... and guess what happened?
As I still on x58 marvel controller messed everything up.
Here is a benchmark:

Is there anyway to increase those speeds? Or should I upgrade the rest of components as well. Shame a bit, as I got this setup under water finally.

go for the gigabyte ud5 oc board,it has newer marvell controller, just as fast as intel sata3,only other way is new board/cpu

HI there

Had an interesting meeting with Samsung this week regarding their 830 series.

They are stating because their drive uses an ARM9 Risc MCX controller with 3 cores their drive has one big advantage which is better garbage collection, auto defragging etc. means their drives last longer and they don't degrade in performance as you fill the drive.

All sounds rather impressive and the controller in itself looks a very impressive piece of kit, I think it certainly makes Samsung a serious contender and one to consider is their sales blurb is true about performance not degrading over time and their drives supposedly having double the lifespan of other SSD drives, rather big claims I must say.

If they do have double the lifespan, it's a shame that's not reflected in the warranty.

In 5 years time, we'll have a much better idea about SSD reliability and lifespan. Until then, Intel's (unique?) 5 year warranty makes their drives more desirable to most than any benchmark. Plus the 520's top most benchmarks as well.

I agree that Samsung's are great drives, but 2 years extra warranty for the same price (This Week Only anyway) means there's no competition IMHO.

Now it isn't the best time to get new board and cpu. Ivy is just round the corner, and SB-E it isn't worth the hassle if we take 3820. I'll not buy Intel's hex cores, no for their prices. So probably will have to wait a bit and upgrade to ivy.
