** SSD MEGA TEST ** Want to know whats best for you? Look inside!! UPDATE 14/02/2012

This may have already been asked and it may be a daft question but why were some drives tested with MS drivers and others with IRST drivers?

Had an interesting meeting with Samsung this week regarding their 830 series.
....

Did they provide any information about whether the consumer 830 series has built in AES-256 encryption. The enterprise PM830 data sheet says they do but I cannot find anything that states whether the consumer 830's have it. For laptop use this is a significant advantage.

I've been waiting on Samsung support for answer but heard nothing so far.

Got a reply from Samsung, sadly no built in support:

Unfortunately the Samsung 830 has not build in the AES 256 encryption, but it could work with software like True Crypt (although it is better to double check with the software company about compatibility etc).

Well as i live in S-O-T i popped into Overclockers (cutting delivery costs :D ) and picked up a Samsung 830 (128GB) while they were on *This Week Only* price of £149.99 :)

Heres a few benchmarks i did..

I see quite an improvement over my older OCZ Vertex 2E with an extra 200 ish point in 3DMark11 & 3DMarkVantage.. BF3 runs better too, just seems smoother and more responsive than ever now,NO stutter at all even when fps drops to 40 while my settings are all High with 2xMSAA @ 1080p.

Very happy with this so far.. Cheers OCuK :D

My Corsair performance pro 256gb (78% full already!), very pleased with it :)

HI there

Had an interesting meeting with Samsung this week regarding their 830 series.

They are stating because their drive uses an ARM9 Risc MCX controller with 3 cores their drive has one big advantage which is better garbage collection, auto defragging etc. means their drives last longer and they don't degrade in performance as you fill the drive.

All sounds rather impressive and the controller in itself looks a very impressive piece of kit, I think it certainly makes Samsung a serious contender and one to consider is their sales blurb is true about performance not degrading over time and their drives supposedly having double the lifespan of other SSD drives, rather big claims I must say.
Samsung should back up those claims by increasing the warranty from 3 years to 5 years, I might just buy one then. :)

I'm tempted by the Samsung 830 as my next drive but what concerns me is what they will be like with firmware updates should issues be found later down the line. Crucial seem very quick to acknowledge and deal with issues which is reassuring. But then I ahve limited experience of these matters.

What drives would you like to see tested? This is something that I'll be keeping on top of so fire away with suggestions!! (provided its a line we stock of course) :)

Just wondering when the next batch of drives will be tested. I'm about to pull the trigger on a new build and my choice of SSD is one that's holding me back. I was going back and forth between the Samsung 830 and Crucial M4 (128gb), but then I read this ( http://thessdreview.com/our-reviews/ocz-vertex-4-128gb-ssd-review-and-1-4rc-fw-comparison-ssd-steroids-for-your-vertex-4/3/ ) about the OCZ Vertex 4 with the upcoming firmware update. The AS SSD benchmarks are impressive.

I would really appreciate a second source to confirm the results!

What afrocomb has just said! ^^^

So 128Gb versions of the Crucial M4, Corsair Performance Pro, Samsung 830 & OCZ Vertex 4 please.

Thank you!

One of the main benefits of an SSD is the access time, and that will be fast as hell on sata2 or 3 so stop making excuses :D

These look the main contenders for my next SSD but in 256GB variants, I'm leaning a bit more towards the Corsair or the Samsung atm but need to do some more research before I make a decision

This surprised me somewhat :) Happily I might add.
Not an up to date system by any means (rig in sig). Using SATA2 ICH10 ACHI
Sandisk Extreme 240Gb
