Developer has revealed why a-life2.0 is broken
They've confirmed that for it to work correctly the radius cone needs to be much wider - which is exactly what that mod does
And we know the mod kills performance and the developers has stated the same thing - they had to pull the radius in otherwise this game had no chance of running on consoles. But unfortunately because the system was designed to work over a large area, when the radius is pulled in, it breaks a bunch of stuff
On the PC there was no harm done to have this as an option in game, to chose the size of the simulation as crude as it is.
Older games were running basically on a single core, zero multitheading...It does make sense after seeing what some of the mods to resolve the system have revealed. Just looking back at the old games, you could run with Anomaly/Misery mods and have simulation distance cranked all the way up, but performance absolutely tanked, even with it being broken down into zones.
Hopefully they keep working at it and can come up with a solution that sits as a nice balance in the middle somewhere, no doubt the modders given enough time will be able to keep digging and maybe figure out something themselves eventually.
