Sorry for being cautious.

S.O.C. was actually pretty stable for me. I played it all the way through without access to patches and had about 5 crashes to desktop.

Clear Sky patched however had a ton of script bugs so I couldn't progress, plus crashing to desktop a lot more than 5 times (including the initial launch, not a good sign).

So yeah, I'll wait for at least one patch before considering purchase. :)

weird I encountered a critical bug near the start of COh (never got the doc quest) and only found about about it in the power plant, and couldn;t be bothered to start again.

CS Ran perfectly and I loved it much more than soh, the way you get artefacts by crawling through anomalies rather than just finding them in huge piles next to anomalies was awesome.

played through the whole thing without much incident but when i get to the powerplant and am chasing strelock it crashes every 5 seconds :(

so have never finished either of them.

But they both diverrged from sneaking around in the rubble to but "throw billions of enemies at them as a finale fight".

So not too bothered hate that style of game play but love the sneaking around with crappy guns hunting fame fortune and bloodsuckers :D

Some pictures from

The liquidators working on the roof of the power plant.

They could only stay up there for 40 seconds at a time so had to run up the stairs in lead suits then try and throw a shovel full of rubble back into the reactor through the hole in the roof.

Igor Kostin had to wrap his camera with lead and stayed up for several minutes, saying "The sacrifice of these men should never be forgotten" as his reason for exposing himself to hazardous levels of radiation (he has had to have several thyroid operations through out the years but is still alive)

The men sent up (liquidators) were simply, reservists from the army and had to make their own lead suits from scrap lead.

60,000 of the 800,000 liquidators have died.

Igor Kostin spent the following years photographing everything about the disaster including mutated apples, babies and 8 legged horses.

If you google image Igor Kostin you get quite a lot of images from Chernobyl I'd never seen before.

Tessellation is automatic. Rounder edges on the game characters is about all I can notice though. The geometry in the game shows that the engine is getting a bit dated now. Still, it's more stable right enough.
Two issues though. I can't get the sound to come out of more than two of the 5.1 speakers (I have an ASUS D2 soundcard) and my Ambx lighting won't work with it even though all of my other games work with Ambx.
Anybody have any ideas here?

Just installed and had a little run about, runs bloody superb (and looks great), got it maxed out Dx11 in 1680x1050.

Had the same problem i think (Xonar DX), only front speakers worked, had no speech on the intro bit, and got no gunfire sounds etc...., had to switch it back to Generic Software (as i selected my sound card in the options) to get it to work properly.

Turns out that my mistake was uninstalling it, then for some reason it didn't want to be reinstalled. Problems all began when setting graphics in the options and then applying...and I'd get a black screen every time.

However, runs well in Vista 64 so phew..:D

No such option only DX10 with full dynamics etc,

Might sound daft, but did you click on the arrow at the side, adn then scroll it further down for Dx11.

The tesselation option does show up when Dx11 is selected (appears amongst the volumetric lighting etc... options), but isn't there when in anything less.

Btw, does anyone think the Tesselation is working, as that first guy you come across in the mask (who gives you the co-ordinates for the ship), doesn't look tesselated to me, those things sticking out the sides of his mask still don't look round to me with it on.

If you can't tell I'm in my usual Chernobyl background reading phase while waiting for a stalker game to come in the post :D

Yep, every time I get back into Stalker i find myself reading all about it and watching loads of documentaries on YouTube :p

Couple of times its failed to load for me, wouldn't even start (the Stalker Pripyat didn't appear in the middle of the screen as soon as the game was ran, just gave me a couple of secs of spinning reticle next to mouse pointer), so had to go into the Task Manager to kill the process (but game worked again after restarting PC), and then another time, it did start to load (got the Stalker Pripyat logo), but then instead of getting the first logo (the GSC one i think), it just hung on a black screen, so had to Task Manager again to kill it, and it was saying it wasn't responding. :p

Sorry if a little off topic but good post tefal very brave men.

Have to agree. That was something I didn't know. The whole idea behind the STALKER games has been very clever. Excellent games. And another good reason to stick to the PC for gaming. A good display of quality PC only games.

The stalker games are great imo. They must be good if we put up with the quirks that comes with them.

I'm enjoying this one, night time with thunder and lightning is especially atmospheric.
