Star Trek Bridge Crew

My Vive is on its way and will be here next week, I'm guessing I missed all the games on sale dammit lol, but will have Star Trek installed and ready to go !! ( then I need to figure out other "must haves" )

Nice, feel free to add me. Also, I recommend audioshield, robo recall (if available for vive). Both excellent. If you're into Rick and morty then accounting is also for you (free)

So guys, since posting over the past few days, I've almost talked myself into getting the game and VR headset. I know nothing about them though, without trying to start a war, which headset is better, the Oculus rift or the Vive? The Vive seems more expensive, but that doesn't put me off if its a better experience.

I'd be using it in my office with is the smallest bedroom of the house, about 1.5Mx2.5M

I'd primarily use it for this Star Trek game so what do you guys use?

You know that is a really hard one to answer because both headsets have good and bad points so I guess it depends on your set-up, space available and what games you want to play. I know you're only considering STBC at the moment but I think when you start using VR you'll want to play a lot more games as it really is a different world, literally :)

I think the most of us here have Rifts and the good points for Rift are a lighter headset, integrated audio, larger focus point along with a lot of free content (when buying touch as well which you're going to want especially as you will be playing bridge crew). Now all the plus points I've mention are of course subjective and I've never used a Vive so I'm only going on what I've read from people who've own both headsets. The Rift now fully supports roomscale with 3 sensors (two still classed as experimental I think) but this is at the expense of using a lot of USB ports on your PC which could cause issues and you'll have cables running around you room (can be an issue with the other half and it does look untidy).

The Vive on the other hand uses lighthouse base stations and all you need is to plug them in at a power point and they sync wireless so no cables running from your PC or any USB issues. I think the general consensus is that the Vive tracking solution is the better option and gives a good roomscale experience with less hassle on setting up (again though that is subjective). At the moment I think the Touch controllers of the Rift are superior to the Vive wands but the Vive will soon have the new Knuckle controllers which will probably surpass the Touch controllers when released, that of course would have course mean shelling out more later if you did go with the Vive now but it sounds like money is not an issue for you.

There are many more points I could mention but the bottom line is that both headsets are great and you cannot go wrong with either of them.

@RockSteddy - Thank you for the detailed reply! Decisions, Decisions!

In that small of an area I think most people would recommend the Rift. There isn't a lot between them, but you do get free games and software with the Rift and it is cheaper.

But, as I say to everyone who asks, if you can at all see can you try each headset before buying.

Purely for the free games you get (robo recall being one of the most incredible gaming experiences I've ever had), the touch controllers, better optics and lighter headset, the rift is a great choice.

That said, the tidy lighthouses, slightly larger fov, and upcoming knuckle controllers do make the vive a great piece of kit to consider. Plus, I do find the stock foam comfier on the vive (I am awaiting custom foam cushions for the rift which are reportedly much better).

As for STBC I still haven't got around to playing with you guys...

Did a VR night at a mates house Saturday and left him playing STBC and after he finished the first training mission he hit quick match...things got hilarious as he took the captain with not a clue what to do...there was a young Scottish lad in the session and one other, they both were going crazy trying to figure out what to do, with the lad constantly talking/singing along with what he was doing...we were ******* ourselves listening to him. This is the point I found out that somewhere in the rift/sensors there is a microphone...

So after the ship was destroyed I did a quick match...and got grouped with a bunch who obviously knew what they were doing the captain knew exactly where the enemy vessels would appear, everything...pretty boring as I basically sat playing as engineer, getting the eye from the redhead. The missions are too linear and need to be more random because clearly once you learn them it's too easy...

Overall I'd say the impression I got is that this game is more fun if nobody has a clue what they're doing and are up for a laugh...it's cool to "win" though.

Absolutely this. A lot of the fun comes from the discovery of it, and the odd few times I played with randoms who hadn't played before, I tried not to give away anything that was about to happen.

There's the ongoing missions though which are randomised, so at least you don't know what it about to happen in those. If you can find a group who hasn't played the original Enterprise though, give that a go - it's hilarious as everyone is suddenly dumped in front of the worlds most confusing control panel :)

If you go for prescription lenses, it's generally considered that these are better than the Lens Labs ones.

Fluke do you have the Widmovr adapter/lenses? I only ask as I was interested my self but as I use the VR Cover interface I wasn't sure if the Widmovr adapter would still fit ok? I did email them and all they could confirm was it supports the standard Rift interface and could not comment on other interfaces which is fair enough.

No, I actually have the VR Lens Labs ones (got them long before Widmovr was an option) along with a 3d printed holder from them from a guy off of eBay (the Lens Labs holders were useless). Now, that 3d printed holder was designed for the original Rift interface, but fits perfectly in the VR Cover interface, as they basically copied the original design (as long as you're talking about the standard interface, not the long version they do).

While I can't say for certain it would fit, I'd put money on it being OK. Might be worth emailing the VR Cover guys to see if they know, or to just ask if internally that their interface is indeed a match for the original one.

If I had to buy another set, I'd go for the Widmovr ones though.

Thanks very much Fluke, I'll see if I can speak to the VR Cover people as suggested. Might post on the oculus forums / subreddit as well to see if anyone has found out.
