Star Trek Online

The biggest problem last night was the lack of goals and objectives - but at least the frame work it there. Totally didnt expect open PvP (and I really enjoyed it!) and the borg were pretty cool - the cubes were huge!!!

The funniest moment has to be when Borg were warping into the system - and the Federation are STILL taking out the Klingons! So many people just didn't get it - I mean, give the Klingons a break! Oh well, Cryptic will get the blame - but this time it was just human nature (and retardedness - if there is such a word) that got in the way.

whens headstart beginning ?

Annoyed i'm going to loose all my progress!

This Friday 29th at 6pm. The time is a guess, but this is the time that Cryptic always switch on their server, so I can't see this being any different.

can u be borg or were they ai?

AI

I was also impressed how well the servers handled last night. No crashes, no lag and no drop in FPS (even on SB1).

i wonder what adjustments their going to make in the mean time?

I thought the americans were getting a head start about us?

We get the same head start - it is a global server. Then we have until 8th Feb to insert our retail key.

Update - It is official, on STO launcher it states that the Early start will commence on the 29th at 10AM PST (6pm UK time) :D

Those that experienced the CO launch would probably say that what they are holding back is a massive combat rebalance that no one has tested. :)

Not that I minded, actually made CO challanging at times compared to the over powered defensive powers.

To be fair, looking back that patch was really needed - 5 team lairs should not be able to be completed by one person, but they were by quite a few different builds!

However, the devs have said on the official forums that this will not happen with STO - hopefully they have learned from that mistake, because while needed it did annoy a lot of people!

The fact that the whole STO universe could be so easily changed to open PvP showed the potential of this game. I really hope they will eventually make some instances available where there can be open PvP anywhere - it worked well last night (except the obvious problem of Klingons needed random spawn sites and the lack of objectives). To be fair, most of the problem last night was the fact that computer gamers are jerks

Thats a good sign, now to hope that it wasnt something done purely for the end of beta. Would be nice if they changed the "gameworld" to open PvP immediately for launch rather than being something that they might do, later on, possibly, maybe, somewhere down the line, perhaps.

I wouldnt want it across the whole server - because everyone have the right to choose. But I could certainly see them having instances reserved just for a PvP universe - or some kind of option before you start playing. There are ways to get around forcing EVERYONE into open PvP.

CR - did you go for a life time sub?

Yup, got my lifetime sub :D

Now my dashboard says "You have no products. Click here to enter a key".

Lets hope Steam/ Cryptic get back to me asap.

You could always try phoning Cryptic customer support up - they have a UK contact number, although I cannot for the life of me remember what it is. Perhaps a last minute option for Friday?

According to the stonline site the gold version should still give me head start access from hmv. I sent em a mail tho just to be sure.

I don't think they have updated that for a while. Were you not in the beta? At least you will get the key instantly from an online digital purchase (well, certainly from Direct2Drive anyway).

Trying to work out what my plan is for Friday.

a) Take most of Friday off, sleep most of the morning so that I can stay up extra late (or most of the night Friday).

b) Just play for a few hours Friday evening, but aim to get some sleep for a good full day Saturday.

Hmm, decisions decisions...

What are the rest of you doing?

Booked friday and monday off. Going to start playing mass effect 2, will switch to STO at 6 if the servers are playable then ill continue online probably through to monday evening ^_^ Pizza and kfc... god im going to feel so bad on tuesday.

Yes, I am also taking most of next week off (because I will be working pretty much the whole of the following week). Will be stocking up on quick/junk food for the weekend :D

I found it best to do the story missions and then the patrol missions. I think a lot of people kept repeating SB 24 to level quite quickly. I missed out exploration as i got bored quite quickly of it... Pvp is fun too.

Yes. As one of the devs said on the forums - the only reason people even got to admiral was because of the 48 hours when they accidently made the game very easy.

They've just announced that they are charging via the cash shop for an update on CO. It's only a new area for the level 37 - 40 range but considering that game released without enough content in the first place there is no way they should be charging for it. The areas on CO really aren't that much bigger than the areas in City of Heroes, it would be like adding Skyway City or The Hollows to CoH and making the player pay.

It's like they're trying to do the DDO business model alongside a subscription and that will not fly with already disgruntled customers.

I doubt they'll do it on STO though, they should be making a lot more money from this game due to how much interest it's attracting.

To be fair, it is just an extra city from what I understand? It is completely optional. I know a lot of the lifetime people are annoyed - but it is their fault for not ready the small print of the purchase :)

The only reason they are charging for things in CO is because it is dying. The only thing I expect in the Cryptic store for STO are additional ship skins, uniforms etc. Nothing major.

Is this game as much as a grind as Champions Online was?

It can be at times - but the important thing is that it is a lot more fun! To be honest though, CO is probably one of the least "grind" orientated MMOs out there - except at higher levels when the content ran out. That shouldnt happen anymore and when it does people don't realise they have missed 100+ quests.

Back to the expansion though. Regardless of the payment argument, it is promising for STO if CO can get an expansion out within 4 months (in addition to the major patch changes announced). The CO team is tiny at the moment considering most are helping out on STO for its release.

Got my G13 today. Have set it up to the left side of my keyboard. It is very comfortable and the joystick should come in quite useful. Also quite looking forward to setting up macros e.g. auto deployment of skills, auto firing all weapons etc.
