Star Trek Online

I'm losing interest. I don't think it's a bad game, but it's not a great game. I guess I've never really got into it properly.

Subs up in a few day... I'm considering whether to stop it renewing or to give it one more month.

I quit not long after first month. Got to RA5 then to BG5, then got bored. Not enough to warranty paying £10 per month for.

i stopped playing 2 days before my first sub was due, RA4 and well i was bored and wasnt interested in playing Klingon or starting another BO, so unless they add something which catches my eye i wont be re-joining. Had high hopes for it but alas was not to be.

Looks like it is slowly dieing already

When Star Trek Online was launched back on February 2nd, Cryptic Studios touted that they had over 1 million pre-orders and subscribers across their Cryptic Network.

It has now been revealed by Jack Emmert in an interview with "The Big Freaking Podcast" that Star Trek Online now has just a hair over 100,000 subscribers, a drop of almost 90% compared to the launch day numbers.

It is no secret that Star Trek Online has not lived up to the expectations of many players - in fact, even I am not playing the game very much (I haven't logged on for over a month at this stage) - however, when you consider that Age of Conan or Warhammer Online have 300,000+ subscribers, Star Trek Online really is struggling!

That hasn't been stopping Cryptic from moving ahead at full steam with new content all over the place, so hopefully, in six months time, the game will be a very different beast compared to what it is now and maybe, just maybe, it will start creeping up in those subscriber ratings again.

Shame :( publishers wanting the fast track to $$$. It takes more than a great IP it needs tlc :p

I felt it was always going to go that way sadly. Bottom line (for me) was that there just wasnt actually a game there (and what little of a game there was, just didnt seem MMO to me). I did find myself asking some friends a while back just how many of them would have played it if it wasnt Star Trek. None of them answered in the positive.

100,000 is still enough to keep it afloat, but for a license the size of Star Trek it really should have been much much more. Even more sadly for the genre, I dont think it will be the last big name MMO to fall on its face in the foreseeable future.

They're tried to do an mmo without any permanent places. Just you, your ship, your bo's and a load of randomly generated arenas. For explorers there's literally nothing to do. Loot whores might be kept interested for a bit longer, between ships, bo's, ground and ship equipment, but bar the collecting, there's no real game there.

IIRC they only announced 1 million forum accounts had been created or something as equally useless.

Stopped playing now that my included time is up, got 2 fed chars to RA5 and there really isn't remotely enough to do or enough character advancement to work towards that justifies the inflated subscription fee (good trick charging £8.99 ex vat when almost all other mmo's are plus vat  )

Despite the pretty negative vibe I've found while looking at people's opinions of this game, I'm still tempted to try it.

So to that end, is anyone aware of any decent offers for the full game or up and coming trials etc? It seems that there's barely been a price drop since release, unless of course I'm looking in the wrong places.

Don't think any of us have any trial keys left and I havent seen it reduced all that much anywhere.

I found the game fun, just didnt have much left to do in it. May return for a month sometime soon.

Got this email this morning :

Free Trial Weekend
Our first free trial weekend, called the Welcome Back Weekend, is available to former players. Welcome Back Weekend features unrestricted play and begins Friday, May 7, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific and ends Monday, May 10, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. Of course, we'll have a pre-load up early next week so everyone can get the client before the free weekend actually starts.

Demo
Unlike the Welcome Back Weekend, the Star Trek Online Demo will be made available for all players starting May 7 and it features gameplay restricted to the first few missions. It's a great way to introduce your friends to the game.

Interested to see if anything has changed ;)
