Star Trek Online

I tried it again this morning... Seemed a little more stable. Needs AA for certain, but I think it looks fine to me. Certainly enjoy the ground based combat.

AA should be added for release. It was screwing up ATI cards. It is seriously needed though, looks rubbish without! Plus I need something to push my 5970 and warm it up a little :)

Edit: Post your characters if you get time. Would be great to see what everyone created. I will post mine when I get home from the office.

well am redoing what i did in the closed beta, a few hiccups with server but frankly this was expected as the whole world want to play this freaking awesome game.. ran through the tutorial quickly and beamed down to Vega colony, and got stuck in this lake.

A tip if anything happens like this, there is an icon in the top right, that looks like an insect, click that to open a ticket and you can change the instance, and it should reload the setting again.

I'm unable to add anyone to friends list, i got incoming request from CaptainRave, but unable to find anyone else on the list

Well I have to say that last night was a bittersweet evening for me. I've always said that if I played STO at all, it'd be a stop-gap whilst awaiting SW:TOR. Last night I receieved the horrible news that lucasarts released an estimated release date of Spring 2011 for it, which shocked me a little due to it seeming so fleshed out already, it's good and bad news, good that they aren't rushing it, bad that it's going to be so long before I get my hands on it! So, that was the bitter part of the evening.

On to the sweet!! I had a blast in the beta last night, despite the bugs, despite the lag - both of which were fully expected in OB. I found that the game played very much like some of the videos i'd been watching in anticipation on youtube, the space combat feels good, the controls take a bit of getting used to, but I can work with it for sure. I thought the ground combat was going to be the weakest link, but it's actually a lot better than I expected it to be, I guess I had pretty low expectations, but was definitely pleasantly surprised.

So far the only thing I find disappointing is the fact that the difference between the ships in each tier is nothing more than cosmetic - for example, nothing changes other than looks if you select Miranda, ShiKahr or Centaur class. I think it'd be nice if it altered things like bridge officer slots, or device slots, or console upgrades etc. etc.

Most epic moment so far was a borg cube warping in virtually on top of my ship, then proceeding to give the assimilation speech. Just awesome.

Captain Jarakin Fyr of the USS Conquistador. Going full tactical, with a view to rockin' the escort ships.

Napped a key of fileplant but gave up loading from them. The torrent version seems to be getting there....slowly. Left overnight and was 75% done by morning. Should be done by home time.

Tbh I am looking at STO in the same way. Didn't realise they had pushed TOR to 2011! I think it is best that they don't rush it, I just hope the game isn't dated by the time it finally comes out.

Ground combat was my biggest concern in STO, but Cryptic listened to us in closed beta and improved it a fair bit (certainly compared to where it was).

The thing is, the game gets so much better once you get your next tier of ship - the missions become much more diverse and dynamic, ship combat becomes much more complex with many new abilities and enemy ships get abilities that must be taken into consideration before engaging.

That doesnt surprise me, there was a thread on here a little while ago that was talking about a rumour that SW:TOR was coming this month. I shrugged that off in that thread and said that in my opinion it would arrive late 2011. (a viewpoint which was sneered at by some in the thread, whose right now eh?! HA !)

I got a very quick go on STO last night, time constraints and the football meant that I couldnt play for long. Seemed ok, animations were terrible, but I can live with that, never been too bothered by looks. Seemed like it was reasonable, not sure I would pay monthly for it but it certainly didnt feel like something which was going to flop.

Having said that, all the time I was playing I did have this niggle in my head about "missed opportunities". I just couldnt help but think of the incredible things which could have been done with such an immense licence as Star Trek if only more effort and thought was put into the game design (mind you I also had the same feelings about what could have been done with such huge licences as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings).

So still on the fence at the moment.

I think if STO had of had another 8 months or so of development time I think when it came out it would have been amazing. I just don't think they have had the time to complete everything - whether that's their fault for being too ambitious, or Atari's for pushing it out the door like so many publishers seem to do these days. I think the game will change drastically over the next few months from today, but it's whether people will stick with the game or not that is going to decide whether this game is sucessful or not - they'll either do a Warcraft and stick with it, or do a Warhammer and leave.

I do really like the game though, can see a lot of potential in it, I'll be sticking with it - I just hope Cryptic don't make a pigs ear out of it.

Revisit the earth spacedock in the Sol System now and again when you gain a level, as quests open up. Also make sure you hail people at the spacedock as new quests can be obtained quickly from it. You can do that by clicking on the hailing button beneath the minimap.

You can enter warp manually when you enter a system by clicking on the warp button just below the minimap. I think it's the first button on the second row.

Check your map when you're on a quest in a system, it often puts a white ring around the target area you need to be in, and obviously following the objectives in your quest log.

Thanks a lot mate

Aye mate, I agree with your sentiments here - I guess my surprise at TOR's release date came due to the fact that I heard about Cryptic's STO quite a bit after TOR, and being honest, until announcement of closed beta for STO, I had thought that TOR's production was in a much deeper stage. So yeah, STO feels like it has been rushed out the door. The game feels a little rough around the edges for sure, but from my very limited play last night, it honestly feels like the mechanics are in place to make this game very, very good. The next few months will definitely be the litmus test, we'll see whether it'll pull a WoW or a WAR, or even an SWG. Personally though, I have a feeling the playerbase will be very unforgiving, but will be much like that of SWG's playerbase - they'll stick with it with at least a decent sized player base until/unless cryptic screw it up beyond all repair.

I only had chance to make my Character last night - called 'Corkhead' account name is alphabeta765. Blimey theres loads of options in the character creation!

I tried to install the client on my laptop. All seemed well but when i ran the launcher the patching info said that had a 10GB patch to run through. err??

My main comp only had a really small patch to apply and did that really quick.

Anyone had this? any ideas?

Do i have to download the client again from D2D and try installing again?

Cheers :)

I think this is the only reason SWG is still going despite the state it's in - there is a big enough group of people who will play an mmo because it's in the star wars universe regardless of how bad that mmo is.

I think the same thing will happen with STO - despite the fans possibly being even more rabid than the SWG ones, they will stick with it unless it's really, really unplayable, because it's a chance to live in the star trek universe.

Hopefully that solid playerbase will give the game the chance to mature into something special.

It would seem that it installed incorrectly on your laptop. I remember this happening a number of times in Champions Online. If you have the ability to, you can just copy the files across from your main PC. Otherwise your options are to either re-download the client from D2D (which might not solve your problem) or just let it patch.
