Star Trek Online

Was really unsure in the first part of the tutorial opening but now I'm up and running I have to say I'm loving it :D I love the patrols and USS Stephen Hawking is taking a bashing but the bad guys just keeps coming off worse, my damage control teams must be working overtime :D

I think they need to introduce player run bases... and private factions. Sure it would be more like eve but that is one of the fun things about eve itself and probably what has sustained it for so long...

I am enjoying the game, the ground combat feels good, obviously laggy as hell etc tonight! hehe

One thing that gets me is the space combat though, something about it doesn't feel right with me, maybe its the ship controls, no tracking/following etc..

The main problem for me, is that all the space engine is making me wanna play is EvE, I pretty much don't even know why, but I'll have to try eve again and compare and contrast I thinks!

When you finally get a smooth battle (had a couple of land and space so far), it really does show the potential of the game.

The problem is that I can't see them fixing all the little issues before it comes out of "beta". And all the little issues kinda add up.
I like the game(lots), but as it is at the moment , it will not be purchased by me, and certainly will not justify a monthly charge.
Its definitely been rushed out, I don't even think the end content has been finished.

5-6months time is probably going to be the sweat(sic) spot, but I just hope the game does not get wrote off en mass before then.

Meh, gets better but, still too many things that just feel wrong. Really don't like the sector map, feels very wrong, battle scales seem wrong. Ickle shuttles and massive dreadnaught types all basically coming right up to you and both circling each other, which is becoming tiresome very very quickly.

Needs to be a range of fighting styles, bigger ships tend to stay at range and are slow, which means you need to be able to fire outside of a 10km range, which in the realms of space travel feels stupid.

Its got the same horrible not completely useful description of things that champions online had. Every other MMO deals with what the item is and what damage it does pretty simply, recharge, damage per shot and a DPS guesstimate to give you a rough idea to compare between weapons. I never understood how that was so badly done in Champions online seeing as City of Heroes tells you exactly what you need to know, or did so eventually.

Ground combat hasn't been remotely good so far, press 1, press 2, press 1, press 2, thats it so far, uninspiring locations so far, with gfx, animation, design, feel and physics of a game from 5-10 years ago.

I'm still in that "combat is fun because I'm in a startrek ship " phase, but can see it getting very boring very quickly.

HATE the map system, hate the auto teaming(though I assume that can be disabled somewhere). One system/mission I did 3 separate stages then it crashed loading the planet surface for final part. Went in again, did half the first stage then 3 people auto joined me. They all ran off in different directions, complete morons, I finished up the stage, went to the next one they wouldn't stay and fight together all went after a massive group each, left team got kicked out of my own instance basically and had to start again solo.

I don't give a monkeys about instancing in games, I'm all for it if like in COH it means if no ones about you want to play with, it can scale to you on your own, if you want to group you can, and make it way harder in the process, its just the way its done I dislike, and the world between instances, should all be one world with everyone in it.

It just should be right up there with Eve on scale and bioware on story, and Lucasarts/Rodenberry/Blizzard type funding level, on its own engine that looks a lot better, plays better and isn't so damn basic.

Thats the other thing, the ships systems are far to basic, far to overly simplistic power management, boosting weapons/shields/engine system. I want it to feel like a ridiculously powerful starship that I can tinker the tiniest detail, down to dropped 5% off top speed for more power to thrusters and turn speed. Would be great if combat was more than, tab, circle enemy, tab, circle enemy with all AI using the same tactic.

Question, if I cancel my Amazon pre-order and then import the US Collectors Edition from GameStop (So cool), will I still be able to play on the same servers? :)

Yes you will.

For anyone with lag - if you go into the launcher options, are the proxy servers there? That fixed the lag for people in Champions. I guess the servers are very busy. I like the one server, keeps the game populated all my friends in one place.

I hope the quests get more interesting or theres gonna be a massive drop in players after the first month. So far it's all been: Go to place, kill things.

They get much more fun and interesting at higher levels.

The generic deliver missions are quite bugged was trying to figure out how to deliver 10 sheild generators but I couldnt for the life figure it out.

Seems it is bugged ah well I decided to go to a planet and clear that of enemy Klingons, the map only spawned 3 out of the 5 groups. :p Good old beta testing. :)

Yes, two known bugs since the introduction of the genesis content at the end of CB. Two very frustrating bugs! Hope they get these and the server issues ready for launch.

Since no player has gotten to the highest level content, you do have to wonder how bugged it is. Oh well, the joy of playing an MMO!

Aw bums, was hopin for an early lag free few hours but, it doesnt look like it

Down for emergency maintenance
This is straight on the back of 4 hours of maintenance, it was back up for all of 30 seconds at 8am before everybody was booted and it was closed for emergency maintenance.

That's basically what an mmo quest is, you get your quest and kill stuff, travel from a-b or deliver whatever to so and so, where have you been? MMO's have always been like that.
