Star Trek Online

I don't give a monkeys about instancing in games, I'm all for it if like in COH it means if no ones about you want to play with, it can scale to you on your own, if you want to group you can, and make it way harder in the process, its just the way its done I dislike, and the world between instances, should all be one world with everyone in it.

I have to confess that one aspect of the instancing in STO that really annoys me is the loading screens. I can see that really winding me up very quickly.

Warp to Solar System ... Loading Screen
Dock with Starbase ... Loading Screen
Use Turbolift ... Loading Screen
Exit Starbase ... Loading Screen
Warp to Sector Space ... Loading Screen
Arrive at new system ... Loading Screen
Beam down to planet ... Loading Screen
Beam up from planet ... Loading Screen
Leave system ... Loading Screen
Head back to Solar System ... Loading Screen

Admittedly I've never been a fan of instancing in MMOs and generally prefer non-instanced MMOs so I may be a bit biased, but it often feels that I spend 50% of my game time staring at loading screens. I think that will merely serve to seriously rub me up the wrong way.

The kinds of quests the tekkies or trekkers (wtf?) have been asking for would bore me to death, it's as though they want it all role play minus combat.

They do seem to be a difficult bunch to please! To be fair, haven't all the Star Trek games been combat based? Who the hell wants a game of diplomacy and warping about doing basically nothing! Star Trek The Next Generation all over again

Roleplay is for the players to create amongst themselves, or for the devs to implement certain features into the game like in SWG (storyteller, which sucks) that doesn't upset the non-roleplaying community. As far as i know from my little brother who's playing the beta and who is on the forums a lot, a lot of the beta testers are giving ideas that basically would revamp the entire game, now this is why the majority of developers decide to ignore the community, because it probably get's to the point where you think their taking the **** out of the way we've created the game.

That's basically what an mmo quest is, you get your quest and kill stuff, travel from a-b or deliver whatever to so and so, where have you been? MMO's have always been like that.

Not really always been like that.

UO didnt have a single quest or delivery mission :D

i hope they polish the graphics and add AA before release

it looks shocking at the minute.

For an MMO I think the graphics are pretty good all maxed out. AA was disabled on ATI cards as it was messing up everything else. It should be there for release - I hope because I hate jaggies!

really?

i thought they were shocking. maybe i need to tweak the graphics settings a bit and up the resolution

I am not saying they are really really great, but a lot better than other MMOs and better than I was expecting. The lack of AA has really impacted them though. I do them all maxed out at 1900*1200 (or whatever the closest is at 16:10) though, so that could be the difference.

I find both ground and space graphics acceptable, not the best i've seen in an MMO by a fair whack but good enough. Hopefully when AA is fixed the extra crispness will improve on them.

For you guys that were in the closed beta... For the Klingon side how does the gear differences between Klingon and Fed play out at higher level, is it still as bad or does it improve?

I'm one of those types that prefer to play on the darker side in MMOs and am a PvP nut to boot, but the fact that known issues has things like they're aware of Klingons having crap gear at the start and will improve it in future worries me, a lot. Open beta is only 2 weeks or so, so i can't see them being able to find and sort out any balance issues in that short duration before launch. If any of you have played CO then you know how badly Cryptic handle balance, they over compensate by nerfing things to the ground or boosting under powered things beyond the already overpowered.

I'm content to dabble in both sides during the beta to get a feel of the game but would much rather be trying to find bugs and imbalance in PvP which for the time being seems it will be very hard to do while there is no content or gear for one side. My Fed was better geared at level 5 than my Klingon is at level 9 atm, by a long shot, and a lot tougher.

Meh, gets better but, still too many things that just feel wrong. Really don't like the sector map, feels very wrong, battle scales seem wrong. Ickle shuttles and massive dreadnaught types all basically coming right up to you and both circling each other, which is becoming tiresome very very quickly.

Issue with the setting really. Star Trek battles have always been close up rather than at long distance as you would expect space battles to be.

Needs to be a range of fighting styles, bigger ships tend to stay at range and are slow, which means you need to be able to fire outside of a 10km range, which in the realms of space travel feels stupid.

That tends to come with the Tier 2 ships you get at L11. Cruisers are slower and less maneoverable and are fitted with beam weapons so can broadside effectively and beam damage drop off isn't as severe as cannon damage drop off. So they have a much more constant damage output at range compared to escorts which have to get in close.

I didn't get very far with the Klingons. The main problem at the moment is loot dropping in general. At least before the last few patches, the Klingons could do some patrol missions and get some good gear. Now they have universally reduced drops so that you occasionally get something half decent, but most of the time just end up with a useless battery. I have no doubt this will get fixed, but as you say, I do hate Cryptics policy of swining completely the other way and screwing us all over in the meantime. Annoyingly, before the last patch of closed beta, the level of drops was exactly where it should be!

And yes, I would have to agree with RDM above. So much changes after 11 and upwards. Enemy ships become more diverse and you must consider their abilities before engaging. Your own ship gets a lot more abilities that must be managed and the way you play will depend very much on your choice of ship. The missions also become much more dynamic, and much less of the "fire all weapons, all of the time, everytime you warp into an instance".

More than anything I am looking forward to borg hunting :D

Hopefully they raise the drops again then, that's an aspect that they usually get right for the most part. the only part of drops i've seen them struggle with in their last 2 games have been the top scale ones, usually at end game and erring on the lacking side. CoH wasn't realy gear centric (although it is more so nowadays) but i never had any problems there. Co i had no problems with gear other than when it came of the pieces that you had to work for, you'd put the work in for very little gain or alternatively you could craft level 20 odd secondary stuff that was better than blue and some purple 40 gear lol.

Fingers crossed that they give more to do for Klingons to enable them to get that gear rather than repeatedly entering an instance to kill 8 squads.
