Star Trek Online

Bah, well that serves me right for not reading the whole thread. Oh well, I don't really care about the game anyway, was only going to try it because I noticed the key. If the game can't do a simple beta then it's not worth wasting my time on. I'm not willing to waste my time on something that has outdated graphics, and can't even manage to do a proper beta.

Oh well, good thing It only wasted an hour to download and 30 min of reading this thread/creating account/installing.

errr what part of the graphic exactally are "dated" at lease the dam thing uses a gfx card instead of the cpu like WOW , whats the problem ? it is a beta ? they are trying to test everything out , and yes it will break it is basically a massive stress test atm

lol fair does, i had to make some custom fan profiles to stop my card from cooking itself:D

You do realise the latest drivers automatically scale the fan with load and temperature right? Not many people do! Problem was my fan was spinning up to 100% to keep my temps down. No such problem on the 5970 though.

Really annoying.. was nearlly finished on the Gorn Shield mission :(

Don't know why i'm getting so wound up lol.. gonna have to do this all again in a few days.. also Emergency Maintenance Message has gone up:

Star Trek Online is currently down for emergency maintenance, We are trying to get the shard up asap, Please keep an eye on here for more details, and to be advised when the servers are back up, The Sto Team..

Might have something to do with the pricing plan that is going up soon? Hope the server issues get fixed by launch. Although to be fair to Cryptic they have been working hard to get them up again quickly.

MMO launches are always plauged with server issues. I've yet to come across one that has launched without any problems. Wish they would learn and make sure they have plenty of extra servers/bandwidth available.

The problem is, it just isn't economically viable to have enough servers just for the spike of users at launch and start of open beta. They are still doing better than they did with Champions Online - I think it was down most of the first weekend of open beta.

It will get more annoying as launch. Nothing more annoying than getting to the end of a lair that has taken a few hours, only for them to announce emergency maintenance in 10 minutes

Well after playing it for most of today I have these thought's;

Movement on the ground is a nightmare, why have they set it so that when you have a target selected A & D strafe but when no target is selected they turn you left & right. In a larger combat situation in an open area this is totally unintuitive.
Space combat is better but does feel quite slow, although I suspect they have done this to let in the unwashed non-gaming but ST fans who are people that should be shunned at all costs.
The UI isn't the best layout which is odd for cryptic as this is one element of there other games I've always found quite easy to live with, it's a small issue but for an MMO is it absolutely crucial that you have an easy to understand and highly customisable UI for people to put the heavy hours in.

There is a game in there I really want to play and I will keep having a go over the open BETA period but I won't consider buying into this world until at least the first couple of MAJOR patches come out to change a few of the fundamentals.

Yet almost always the solution for companies at launch is to increase server capacity. So they are going to end up spending the money anyway.

So with the starter ship what is everyones tactic in combat?

Personally up front got 2 X Disruptor Dual Cannons Mk II they do around 380/400DPS and a Mk II phaser beam on the aft.

I stick weapon power on for the initial strafe then balanced then either shields or weapons again depending on ships. Tachyon beam on the bigger ships also.
I do the sensor scan to buff myself and debuff the target, equalise shield every cooldown, hit emergency power to shields of it gets hot and hit evasive maneuvering and get out of there :D

Trailer looks horrible, explosions where ships vanish you can see, standing boring shooting no movement and crappy effects and loads of other crap i see gfx and animation wise. Looks like a game from 2004 or somit. Id have expected far better like from bridge commander with kobayashi maru mod for the space combat and half life 2 gfx for ground stuff.

Looks OK to me, especially considering it's still in the beta-testing stage.

My memory of it is hazy but from what i do remember the open beta of CO was quite a bit smoother than the first 2 days of STO have been. It had it's maintenace times often but i never experienced the disconnects or server not reponding/boot outs that this game gave at first.

Other than the crash tonight it's been an improvement over last night, at least i could stay in game :p I think their problem here is that they underestimated just how popular this IP would be, they'll have it fixed by launch but more likely in days.
