Star Trek Online

i dont like the limited x and y movement on the space areas , ie there are ships below you but you cant get down to them ships seem to be limited to 30 or 45 deg`s movment top and bottom and i hate the hube blue sheild outlines on all the ships , we can see the enemies and your shield status on the ui no need for it on the ships

Aye i'm finding that more than a little frustrating. The only reason for it that i've seen on the forums was that they thought it would cause too much imbalance if it were in due to shields being positioned on the sides. Funnily enough i will hit shields even when attacking from above or below so i'm really not sure what or if any real reasons are behind it.

Trailer looks horrible, explosions where ships vanish you can see, standing boring shooting no movement and crappy effects and loads of other crap i see gfx and animation wise. Looks like a game from 2004 or somit. Id have expected far better like from bridge commander with kobayashi maru mod for the space combat and half life 2 gfx for ground stuff.

You can't possibly base it on a trailer. Bridge Commander's graphics don't even come close - the kobayashi maru just used some high quality textures on the ships. Everything else looked rubbish.

Most people complaing about graphics in STO don't have the ability to turn everything up. I actually thought they looked pretty good - certainly by MMO standards. AA will also help when they re-enable it - soon hopefully!

Forward shields cover both front, front top and front bottom. Same for rear, aft and port shields. Hence you have 4 zones of coverage. Take out the fore shields and hit from above and below and you'll hit the hull.

Ah thanks for that, puzzle solved. Should've just added top and bottom shields with a little more strength instead so that X + Y could be used better. Ach well.

So with the starter ship what is everyones tactic in combat?

Personally up front got 2 X Disruptor Dual Cannons Mk II they do around 380/400DPS and a Mk II phaser beam on the aft.

I stick weapon power on for the initial strafe then balanced then either shields or weapons again depending on ships. Tachyon beam on the bigger ships also.
I do the sensor scan to buff myself and debuff the target, equalise shield every cooldown, hit emergency power to shields of it gets hot and hit evasive maneuvering and get out of there :D

My current tactic is Dual Phasers and Torp Launcher on the front and Phaser Turret on the rear. At 10km drop the speed right down and just pound away with all weapons, as soon as the shield drops hit the High Yield button. Emergency Power To Shields and keep charging the front shield. Pretty effective though can be touch and go vs 3 Birds of Prey or very large ships due to all their damage going on just the one shield.

I really wish they had added these shields. Who knows, they might after release.

Well when in star trek do they go, "Oh noes captain. Top shield is down!" or "Aiieee Bottom shield down, we're doooooomed!".

They aren't mentioned in star trek, and it makes sense that each shield generator covers the whole section of the hull on that zone.

Thats because they do ""Oh noes captain. Dorsal shield is down!" or "Aiieee ventral shield down, we're doooooomed!". :)

More shields would add more strategy. SFC was much better when ships had 6 shield facing and Bridge Commander was great with its dorsal and ventral shields.

4 shields just remind you that while the environment feels 3D it is still 2D like SFC.

not really at the level i need to think about such things really, just keep their point of attack rotating and when they have an opening exposed use evasive maneuvers + high yield to get my ship turned a more expedient rate, almost always do fights in attack config atm

oh and dorsal + ventral shielding + rotational axis would really complete the space combat, firing arcs linked to the physical phaser bank locations on the ship, but then you just have a bridge commander mmo....which would rock
