You get a Miranda class ship, which is a basic ship. You can customise it however to look more like other ships but until you reach Lt. Commander level you are stuck with that one. You can customise such things as the saucer hull and nacelles for models, and then you can change the skin design.

And choose your bridge

Does anyone know where the server is based?

I believe with Cryptic in California.

That could be a bit of a killer for pvp then i had some ships warping all over the place in the beta. (excuse the pun) lol

Not sure if they were in place yet, but for Champiosn Cryptic introduced proxy servers that solved everyones problem. The beta was pretty laggy at times though, this should be better for release.

It will be the same server. Post on the official forums. Not 100% on that, but I know Cryptic work on it a lot, so you can only assume it is close to them.

Wonder what the pings are like to the california server

About 150-200 for me. Fine for an MMO, rubbish for a FPS

We won't. But it isn't too bad. It will go down betwen 11am and 1pm for us. With champions it went down daily for the first month, but now only goes down one day per month.

Servers must be getting hammered at the moment - better than Champions did at this point though!

edit: also when on away missions, how do you go back to your ship?

To add friends, press "o". Go to your (I think "friends" tab at the top) and at the bottom insert their @handle.

OR

Go the the bottom right of the main website and insert their handle there.

To exit an away mission, there is a beam up button on the second row below your minimap/above your mission objectives.
