Star Trek Online

new patch is good, tombstone as i stated at the start of the post i only quoted you because you covered a lot of points. Im not trying to bully you into anything :)

I don't want to play too much in the beta as I can't stand redoing stuff, so I'm going to keep up with the patches, but the game felt great last night.. when was the new patch implemented?

i stopped at about 11pm yesterday or was it 10, i lose track in mmos. so im assuming it went up early this morning, no lag whatsoever. Slight jerkiness in the alpha quadrant on ground on an ati 5870

I'm not missing out, nor will I be bullied into buying the game just because its seemingly impossible to not like it. I've tried it, I tried hard to convince myself to like it (which in my opinion is something you should never have to do with anything). I'm not overly fussed about WoW, WoW also wasnt the right MMO for me, as I say UO and Daoc were the two peaks of MMO gaming from the last 13 years imo.

To be honest I never really understood why people try so hard to get others to like the games they do. Different people have different tastes after all. At least you tried the game and thought "Nope, not for me."

I feel for you on this and I mean that sincerely..tbh I feel for every MMO fan who didnt get to experience the sheer brilliance of UO in its prime.

I was around at that time, I did experience it, and I hated pretty much every minute of it. Much preferred EQ to UO.

How can you say i dont believe theres any instancing in wow apart from that, then say sto has instancing everywhere =

Technically every zone a different instance, probably on a different box. Put you get seamless transferred from one zone to another without any loading screens (Although you sometime get a stutter as you fly across zone lines).

Only get loading screen you get is then you zone into a dungeon or change continents.

Makes it fell very much like a world. STO seriously need it. Another that bugs me about STO loading is a lot is of it seemingly pointless. I mean why when returning to home do I zone in space above earth, fly a few yards then zoning to the Starbase. There’s nothing interesting in the space above earth, so why can’t I just zone into the Starbase?

Yeah I remember back then people generally fell into one of the two camps, either preferring the EQ style of MMO or the UO style of MMO. Both had so much depth that it was nigh on impossible to play both without disappearing from reality entirely ! :D

Indeed, which is kind of why I actually prefer modern MMOs. I do not have to devote my life to them to enjoy them. ;)

What I do miss though is meaningful choices, in EQ for example in the Scars of Vellious expansion you had to make a choice to support either the dwarves or the giants and it was a pain to change you mind later on in the game. We need more of this in MMOs again. But then it means developers making content that only some of their players will see and content seems to cost so much these days.

Indeed...and another thing which is missing these days is danger. A sense of risk. (from such things as some of the nightmare corpse runs in EQ, and from other players in UO). There is so little consequence these days in MMOs to your actions that death has become largely meaningless and is often used as nothing more than a quick form of travel to get back to place X.

I hated EQ corpse runs!! Still shudder thinking about them now!

I think they made space combat too easy now!! Fighting +2 Romulans in groups of 3 and they cant get my shields below 90%... another fix needed.

Yes, ship combat has gone even easier (it was far too difficult in CB...certainly for your average player...but it has gone too far the other way now)! At least the alpha stries are fixed now. I am still impressed by how many changes Cryptic are making with each patch - for those not in the CB, we had one like this almost every week!

Well ok, systems/missions are basically dungeons. Fleet actions are raids. Sector space is traveling continents. Its basically the same... How can you say i dont believe theres any instancing in wow apart from that, then say sto has instancing everywhere =/

Well, it's not really the same. If systems are dungeons and fleet actions are raids (Which is a good comparison), then this game has no missions. At the very least Sol, Earth Starbase, and sector space should be one single instance, and I'm very disappointed it's not.

anyone else think Eve looks so, so much nicer?

Yes, absolutely. The game is gorgeous now that they finally updated the planets.

However I'll give STO more of a go when my copy arrives through the post (Yes, it's half decent enough for me to keep my rainforest £17.98 pre-order!).

Tell me, I've not played in a few days. Does this latest patch get rid of the loading screen graphical glitch when playing with widescreen resolutions? I used to get the com-badge logo in the middle as a 4:3 graphic, then whatever was there before across the sides.
