Star Trek Online

Theres closed beta, but its not worth bothering, its two shortish windows before the open beta, pre-order the game and you get into the open beta starting in two weeks. Theres two half days of closed beta before then, a lot will be through the night due to US time zones so not worth bothering to be honest.

SO far, I decided to finally look up a few video's, it looks a bit crap to be honest, I pre-ordered, will try the open beta, cancel maybe if its truly awful or might just play for a month so I can say I played it.

Ship combat looks awful, I saw a 6 min long vid of a guy simply going around in circles killing birds of prey, it looked dull, long and drawn out, he wasn't in a massive ship but birds of prey are supposed to be almost a fighter, tiny little thought to shield all about ambushing targets from cloak and can't take a beating.

But its the ridiculous nature of the combat, you have an engineer, every so often he just went from shields run out to full shields due to I assume the shield boost from engineer.

If feels so wrong, in the star trek world you might have a last ditch boost to something, but not repeated over and over in the same fight, it devalues the fighting and frankly made it look utter turd.

I'm praying for great story and decent quests that feel worthwhile, but I get the impression its almost all combat missions with very little "star trek" feel to the game, combat combat and combat.

But obviously its very hard to tell just from a couple video's and without playing. I just don't think it looks like they've got it close to being great. I also suspect the story will be very lacking relying heavily on genesis created content of generic repeatable missions without a good story behind them.

It does feel like they are going the Lotro route though, one side main, level up, "monster play" for the other PvP side, in this case Klingons, and episodic content which I pray will be as story driven as Lotro and have a pretty long intensive story for release aswell as releasing content every few months.

£50 for a PC game? No thank you. It's not a console you know. Oh wait maybe it is.

Seriously what do you get for £50? Nothing but a little bit of extra code. £40 is bad enough though. PC games should not be any more than £25-£30, it's not like they have to pay for permission to code for it.

I am tempted to pick this up, though I will give the Beta good go before deciding, might give me something new to play and put WOW down for a bit.

So don't pay £50 then, there are plenty of deals to get it much cheaper out there, savvy gamers know that.

£50 for a KHAAAAAAAAAN! emote is totally worth it. All of you that disagree are in denial!

Having said that, I bought the rainforest deal for half the price... which comes with a, beta, headstart, a borg bridge officer and a T-Shirt (that I'll more than likely never wear...)! :(
