Star Trek: Picard

Time travel is a very cool concept - so happy with S2 :)

Q - would have been a great idea to do exactly that. Q ages himself to mirror Picard.

Tom H - this series is not about Picard as a younger man, it is about where he is now. So Patrick S is the perfect man to continue playing Picard. A younger man playing Picard as his younger self is a completely different show. There is also the fact that although Quinto is a great Spock there will still be some outraged that the actors have been replaced. I'm all for as much Trek as we can get, so a show where we see Picard cutting his teeth in space would be awesome.

Somebody forgot about the ending of the first season....
Remember, he 'died' and had his consciousness transferred into an android body with a limited lifespan. That was the perfect opportunity for a 'body swap' imo.

As to Quinto, the more I've watched him as Spock, the more I don't mind him, he's no Nimoy but lets be honest no one can replace him. In all honesty though the 'remake' star trek movies are really just using the names for a space jolly and using lots of lens flare rather than being 'star trek'

When was the last real star trek in peoples opinions?
Enterprise ? do people count the movies with quinto etc?

Picard at least mostly respects the continuity of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and the first ten films. It had problems, but nothing insurmountable. ENT had many issues, but resolved at least a bunch of them in Season 4.

The JJTrek films stand apart, because time travel ********. And STD is a continuity mess, both with the rest of Trek and with itself.

Like last time, they create a trailer with elements from TNG to lure you in with a false sense of recognition. They lull you into a false sense of Star Trek then you get the rancid pile of rotting entrails vomited up by Kurtzman and co with their own agenda and messages.

the purists will say DS9. :p

Voyager and Enterprise don’t count.
Voyager > Generations > DS9
Enterprise was pretty good imo felt like startrek atleast.

picard is like generic scifi video game with the cast of a series and a bunch of nostalgia thrown in

I guess startrek fans should be happy they get anything at all though.
Stargate was huge too and pretty much abandoned

their own agenda and messages.

Oh noes, an agenda!!!111oneoneonetwosix :p

By all means, criticise the writing for being hamfisted about it at times. But Trek was created by a guy as a vehicle to get his liberal, humanist, weirdy thoughts out there. That these guys aren't trying to hide it/as good at hiding at as Gene is not a surprise because they don't have to hide it from the network any more, and it's not anywhere near as much of a problem as fandumb would make it out to be.

The telegraphic of plot twists, the lousy villains and the wild pacing issues are waaaaaaaay more problematic.

Everything about it is problematic. I agree on the terrible writing. I can't even remember what the whole point of it was, the final episode was so badly done, it was a jumble of nonsense. I recall a fat Data wanting to be switched off or some such crap. I can't remember how or why he was there and frankly I don't care. Then the person who resembled Picard died and became an android but pointlessly as he was still old, frail, crusty and worse still, a man.

In terms of movies, the ones with the original cast.

In terms of tv series, I'd probably go with TNG, DS9 (not as good as babylon 5, which it basically ripped off) and Voyager broke away from the primarily episodic nature and imo didn't work quite as well, although I still enjoyed them more than Discovery (although Captain Pike was pretty good imo, I'm actually mildly hopeful that series will be better than discovery etc).

Picard had 'heritage' to work with but I woudn't say the writers fully delivered on it's potential.

Enterprise, didn't even include star trek in the title until the third season so even the creators didn't think it worthy of being part of star trek lol

For me TNG, DS9 and Voyager. In that order. That is Star Trek to me.

Enterprise came close, but they messed it up a bit I felt, missed opportunity.

The original is just too old and looks silly and the rest are just kind of crap.

A lot of old trek had agenda and political/social stuff behind it, that's not the problem, the storylines still stood up, these days its overly agenda based above story and character which is what makes it suck balls.

+1!!

The "Star Trek was always woke" argument is somewhat valid but is like comparing a Vegas magician's act to your 5 year old nephew doing magic tricks from the gift set he got for his birthday two days ago.

Normally I would do my nut at different actors playing the same character but I don't feel it really matters in this instance. Perhaps because she has been seen so little. When I clicked on the spoiler tag I was expecting something like Cate Blanchett being cast as Dr Beverly Crusher. Now that would have got me riled. :p
