****Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker - Official Thread****

I've been pretty neutral on the new films, theyve been ok, but as I've said before I find most star wars stuff average anyway.

That trailer though... They no longer have a clue and have let themselves be utterly tied in knots by their fans. I don't know if they ever had a plan but the three films are just rehashing the original trilogy to keep old fans happy, which they never will be, and as such have made no efforts to actually make a new story with any coherence.

The fact that this should be a huge film and two thirds of the trailer is showing the old films to keep the fans happy is just embarrassing.

I struggle to think how they could have made a worse trilogy. Theyve picked a halfway house and as such failed to attract many new fans and also alienated their old fanbase. They'll have to look back at this and realise what a horrible job they've made of such a golden opportunity. I will watch the last film but I go in expecting utter, utter tripe.
This technically is not a trailer.

It was a special reel shown at D23 the Disney expo over the weekend and then released online on Monday. It was really just to get the fans at the event hyped up. I loved it though. Some nostalgia followed by a good look at some scenes from the movie.

The proper trailer won't arrive till October sometime.

Yeah cos how complicated is it to power up and fly a star destroyer? Oh wait Rey knows how to operate and expertly fly every spacecraft in the galaxy.

Well those are the originals that have been around 30+ years so the rebels are bound to have intelligence on how to fly them. Just as long as it's a crew of rebels and not Mary Sue.

Theres going to be a 10th film.

Not sure if it was always planned or its just going to take that long to unwind some of TLJs more controversial elements, but Disney arent going to mess this up.

Why not? They messed all the other ones up, so it seem more likely based on their past performance. Don't forget, this is nothing to do with Disney, it's all the fault of the fans for not liking what hacks like Johnson are putting out. They won't be doing it "better" if they still think they are doing the right thing.

I know quite a bit about how Disney works internally. They know they messed up, they are course correcting for all they are worth with a VERY clear remit to get the fans back onside.

FWIW I liked Rogue one, but the other two recent movies were meh. I think they will do a good job going forwards.

Even Rogue One that is considered by most to be the best of the Disney Star Wars movies has its issues, and was subject to a lot of reshoots and major re-editing. Disney got through that one by the skin of their teeth, and more by luck than design I think. I can't think how Disney can accomplish such a turnaround without clearing out the likes of Kathleen Kennedy who presided over and created the current problems, and obviously is out of her depth at Lucasfilm.

Given how Disney pretty much nail every movie they make from all of their various studios (MCU and Pixar are notable examples) except Lucas film I think it’s fairly obvious where the issues sit.

Not cleared out, reduced responsibilities, effectively sidelined (or rather doing the job she was supposed to be doing).

They know they need to save the brand and they are going to need more runway than a single film offers, but Disney are already commited financially.

It's common knowledge there are a few new trilogies in production but there currently are no plans for a 10th film as part/continuing the original star wars saga. Unless my early morning google fu has failed me.

Or drop a few bombs from above

I don't get why people get so bent out of shape with the physics in that film but ignore everything else that went before. Don't get me wrong the film was garbage but so was the physics in the others. I mean they never explain how the Falcon with those rear engines spins on a sixpence with it's rear engine whether in Space or atmosphere. Same with a tie or xwing. Or how they would age differently travelling the universe at hyperspeed in relation to each other.

Yet these gravity bombs come along and the internet can't get over it.

There needs to be a 10th film to undo the damage of the TLJ.

Thats my feeling, two more films gives them time to properly spin out the important character arcs and conclude the less well received ones and set up the big bad properly.

Its the only way to conclude the “trilogy” without bodging it and damaging the brand permanently.

To be honest i coulnt give a toss about the bombs(hell we had TIE bombers in TESB!) What bugged me was how dumb those ships and the whole set up was. This dreadnought just sat there while these slow as **** lumps of tissue paper creep towards them, thankfully one TIE managed to take out three of them by tickling them...sorry crashing into them.

It was ******* embarrassing.

Fair criticism. But internal consistency is important with sci-fi and fantasy if you want people to buy into your world building and story. None of the ships display Newtonian physics and I don't think we've been shown a solely vectored thrust model for any of the space vehicles.

Personally I found the addition of fuel a larger affront than the bombers. I mean we'd had 7 movies and 2 long TV series all canon where fuel is barely mentioned, if at all, and suddenly its a thing. And an important thing at that. And an important thing the Rebels Resistance hadn't planned for apparently.

The Last Jedi is a car crash, but arguing about which is the dumbest thing about is akin to arguing about the Angelic dance floor capacity of a pin.

I don't think any "old fans" (myself included) wanted a re-hash of the OT, that was the biggest "old fan" complaint about Ep7 - that it was just a rehash of Ep4
That and the Mary Sue that is whatsherface. "Ma, I woke up this morning and you'll never guess what - I'm a Jedi now!" That was plain embarrassing for whoever wrote the script.

You break the internal rules of the fictional universe at your peril. Especially if you do it just because "it looks cool" and then come up with some ******** excuse that makes no sense in the already established universe. When your characters, stories and fictional universe are so badly written that even the fans are calling shenanigans on the characters acting in dumb and unexpected ways, then you will lose your audience. They just won't go along with you in the suspension of disbelief. You've jolted them out of the story.
