Probably more of a team effort with everyone around him, plus his then wife was brilliant at editing the films. For the prequels i suspect it was a case of Emperors new clothes and no one had the guts to tell him to stop!

yeah i re-watched the plinkett reviews over the weekend (they are better than the films) and all the behind the scenes footage just shows a bunch of quiet terrified people agreeing with whatever george said (and him being totally clueless about things).

oh well, the new looks like it might actually be good, fingers crossed.

I'd watch them both. Although "Clone Wars" isn't canon it's still great and is the only thing I've watched that explains Grevious's cough and shows the kidnap of Palpatine. The battles between Ventress and Anakin is very well done too and is better the RotS for showing his burgeoning dark side tendencies. Then move on to "The Clone Wars". There are a few poor epsiodes (pretty much anything involving Jar-Jar) but some absolute gems. There is a list somewhere which explains the proper order as it wasn't aired in the intended order (they wanted to start with Joda as a hook into the series, apparently).

Thanks for that. Will get watching them both then! :)

The film that nearly everyone considers the best (Empire) is the one George had the least to do with. Coincidence I'm sure. ;)

That doesn't say much, Empire is hardly a master piece of writing or acting. In fact it's pretty **** unless viewed through the eyes of a 10 year old. ROTJ is terrible, at least as terrible as anything except the PM.

The best of the lot is new hope, a Lucas film and the only one that remotely makes any sense (pre butchering). I'm a fan of the prequels because I see the same wonder in my son's face that must have been in mine while my dad rolled his eyes at the utter drivel story lines. If empire was released today as that story line, we would be pulling it to bits.

I just don't get the criticism that the original trilogy gets for being poor and too simplistic. Yes it's basically good vs evil but within that there are many shades of grey and interesting things going on under the surface.

I mean just the way Vader is viewed by some of the commanders of the Empire is interesting. It could have been all one dimensional but there is a realistic internal conflict there. The relationship between the droids, the character that they manage to get into R2D2 and Chewbacca even though they don't speak. Star Wars doesn't spell everything out, a lot of the depth is unspoken, but it is certainly there.

I mean compared to something like the Marvels Avengers series (which I enjoy) I think Star Wars is deeper and superior on many levels.

So......a really crappy thing happened.

I had my tickets booked for the opening weekend, and then I received an email from the cinema chain telling me that distribution of episode VII in India had been moved till a week later (something about Indian film distribution not wanting it to impact the release of a huge bollywood film due out the same week).

So here I am....thinking I had a week to go and I will now be watching it on Xmas Day instead........

Normally watching English movies in India is better IMO than the UK (better cinema facilities, better sound and picture and a lot cheaper 1.50GBP per ticket)....but this is just crap.

Booked in for a morning showing on 30th December. It was the only day where we could go with our son (age 5) whilst daughter (age 2) is at nursery.

The Boy has been loving watching, and rewatching, the original trilogy for the past month and is well into SW.

Is it worthwhile showing him the prequels in advance of the new one? I've not really watched them all (not sure I've ever seen 100% of either of the first two, though I saw III in the cinema)

I bet he ends up loving the prequels more. Especially revenge of the sith. But it depends on your son I have known some young boys struggle with the slaughtering in that film. My son was fine with it. I would show him them, the action pace will be closer to those in the new ones.

Yeah, I was a bit concerned at the idea of that (the slaughtering), but particularly with the bit with Anakin and the end of his fight with Obi Wan.

Not sure whether to go for it or not. Maybe just the first two

He definitely won't need them for the new film. I have not seen one bit of merchandise that references the prequels in the run up to this film. For me it feels like Disney are trying to distance themselves a little from it. The focus is on IV to VI for sure.

The mystique of Vader was destroyed a little by the prequels in my mind. There was a weird disconnect of him being all messed up and then immerging in the suit.

The prequels had a different look and feel and then when you see Vader and the star destroyer at the end of III it just didn't gel.

I worry for your child though, depending on which version you have shown him, the end of Jedi with the replaced force ghost could be a bit confusing.

If you don't have them get hold of Harmy's de-specialised version...

A New Hope is good but the Death Star attack is just so, so bad. Extremely bad.
