In other news just over a week to go!

Total Clikbait.

Most Directors start out with 100's of hours of footage and often the 'first cut' is a 4-5 hour movie and they have to cut them down.

Some do it better than others of course, and editors are heavily involved.

I am looking forward to this, the last one was promising so i hoping this one continues that. I do think it will almost a copy of Empire, who cares as long as it good.

I feel like I'm probably in a good position here to educate some people on the Post production process :) A quick Google throws up this link which is useful as a guide though.

You're correct, but if we're talking about a studio-led film on the level of SW then it's doubtful that that first cut would be released to the studio by editorial. A cut of that length would surely be just an assembly cut, which is essentially putting absolutely everything they shot in the right order (all cutaways etc.). Hence the long running time. A director wouldn't want to release that to the studio. as it's not a good judge of his creative vision. Fun fact; marketing/trailer agencies receive all material as it's shot and sometimes create their own assembly cuts to get a better feel for the movie themselves. Obviously this will end up being a heck of a lot different from the finished version. Again, if we're talking about a studio-led movie the first cut released to the studio would be a director's cut -- which would only go to a few top execs. That would be around 6-7 months before release (usually a few months after they finish shooting). From there, you would get multiple studio previews (usually 3) which go out to the wider studio/business for marketeers/distribution staff to work on. E.g. send preview 1 to your big international territories to judge numbers, or for them to give notes on what works for their audiences, or doesn't.

I feel you've somewhat done a disservice to editors by saying they're "also involved". Good editors are in high demand, almost more so because they can flit between projects -- e.g. they can step in to replace an editor to "rescue" a project during Post if it's not going well. That can happen without any song and dance like you would get if you fired the director.

Yup, takes weeks and weeks of intense work by the director and editor (usually).
Try months and years. A film like SW would shoot for probably 90 days, so 5 days a week plus travel days etc. you're looking at a 5-7 month shoot. Editorial will be on board from the outset. They will then go into Post production for another 6-12 months. So that editor may have been working on a project for 1.5 years by the end of it.
