Star Wars VIII : The Last Jedi [WARNING: SPOILERS]

Huge Star Wars fan but unlike my friends I seem to have no rose tinted space glasses. Even the fact that the new films are shot using camera angles and techniques that do not match the original trilogy annoys me. There seems to be no drive to try and marry the look and feel of the new material with the old. There is for example an artificial look to the costumes in the new films, they play at the worn in look of the originals but something isn't right and everything looks too plastic.

Rogue One did the best job of matching the OT but even that didn't manage to show enough restrain.

If you are in your 30s or 40s and grew up with the untainted originals I cannot stress enough how good "Harmy's Despecialised" versions of the films are. I can't link to where to get them as it is a grey area but it's not hard to find if you search online. They are amazing.

A heads up for anyone interested; 21st December on BBC Four a documentary called "The Galaxy Britain Built" about the making of the first Star Wars film and the amazingly talented British crew, artists and technicians at Elstree Studio. I have read quite a bit about creative ways they managed to get the first film done on an extremely modest budget but will be watching this to hear stuff from the "horses mouths" so to speak. ;)

Although how the hell did I miss that John Mollo died in October :(, RIP fella, without your costumes Star Wars would be missing so much :(

I don't trust initial impressions anymore, the initial impressions for the Phantom Menace was amazing I recall. I haven't actually read any of these early impressions but await my own judgment on Thursday.

this - first impressions mean nothing these days as quite a few total garbage films have had great first impressions.

I'm unsure about this film - i'm seeing it on sunday but i've seen some good reviews and some terrible ones.

yeah the despecialized versions are the ONLY way to watch starwars, they are what that hack lucas should have done instead of ruin them with stupid additions.

And yeah rogue one had the look, its just a shame they forgot to add characters ;)

Rouge One had FANTASTIC reviews, some call it best star wars, some say it only better by Empire...I think it's good but now that time has settled, it's like a 7/10 for me.

yeah i agree and some of my friends (only the stupid ones :) ) also said it was the best starwars film - but really its pretty average and suffers from really poor characterisation. I simply didn't know much about my characters, what their history and motivations were, and why i should care when they die.

I thought it was great, watching it at the Leicester Square IMAX.

But I haven't watched it since, so it'll be interesting now that the hype has died down what I make of it.

All these new films have what I call the "Skyfall effect". Super hype and rave reviews at the time of release "Best Bond ever" people screamed. Go back and watch it again, the writing is shocking and the story so incoherent it makes no sense.

In 25 years people will still be watching and appreciating Dr No and From Russia with Love and Live and let Die, Skyfall "Best bond ever" I can guarantee will be forgotten.

In my opinion the more money you have to spend these days the more likely you are to miss the mark. The most important part is the writing and story telling and TFA was weak in that department.
