I don't see the issue, he spoilered it like you would any other thread. I don't even see why that was removed, it's your own fault for opening it. Isn't that the whole point of spoiler tags.

I didn't read it. But I do think it was a bit of a dick move. if you want to discuss spoilers etc, why not create a dedicate non spoiler thread like suggested in the sticky above?

At least wait until the films properly released, like with any other thread on here. 'No discussing the episode before its aired' and all that.

I’m seeing it in 25 hours and 15 minutes :p

Glad the reviews are positive and I’ve seem some interesting, non spoiler review comments about (it’s a non spoiler comment from w review but I will hide it as I know people are on a knife edge right now :p)

that whilst it touchs on themes from empire and return it uses these as tools to steer this film and future away from set standard Star Wars tropes which could be really interesting!

I’ll be the judge myself but can’t wait!

Just back from seeing this and I’d say it’s a good movie but story really needed touching up in places. Great action, visuals, feel, acting and characterisation but a few easy things were missed with the plot and the ending was contrived.

How did you manage to see it already?

Plot wise is it (again not really spoiler question but i’ll Tag it in case)

the rebel alliance story that is weak? That’s what I’ve heard. No details, just a yes/no :p

My big problem with the modern star wars films is the characters. They are just a load of one dimensional pretty people that are more like parodies of the original characters. I just don't find myself caring what happens to them.

And most of the time, there is no real sense of dread or danger of what might happen to them anyway, as the film's go from one rollercoaster set piece CGI scene to the next.

It's all just a little too predictable and sterile :(

Hope this one is different, but I somehow doubt it. I doubt Disney cares though, they are raking in the cash.

Maybe I'm just old, jaded and nostalgic over the originals, I don't know.

If you watch the originals in a stand alone mindset, they are just as weak, if not weaker.

However, they as films and characters have benefited from decades of lore and character development; so when we re acquaint ourselves with the originals we have a monumental volume of literature and visual stories to accompany the viewing and fill in the gaps.

This is the same for many 70s/80s/90s sci-fi.

I don't really agree with that. The original trilogy was a great story with great character progression. The film's stand up individually as well.

To give an example of my issues with the force awakens, main character Rey learns the force in about five minutes flat. She's taking on sith lords before the film is finished. In the original trilogy, Luke has to learn how to use it and train to be a Jedi before facing Vader.

Another example, the attack on the death star equivalent (can't even remember it's name) amounts to little more than flying along a trench and blowing it up. Compare that to the fantastic battle at the end of a new hope, with Luke needing two attempts to hit the target with battle raging all around him. It's a great scene.

The new films are far too immediate gratification, no character building. Hence you just don't care about them.

I'm sure I'll watch the last Jedi and be swept along on an exciting rollercoaster ride and enjoy it. But I'm betting I'll look back at it afterwards with an empty feeling and have zero desire to rewatch it.

I certainly haven't bothered rewatching the force awakens, yet I'll happily watch the original trilogy any time.

I think that’s a bit rose tinted. I enjoy, but don’t love, the Star Wars franchise but looking at them objectively they are terrible films with terrible characters.

If you switch off your brain you can really get into them but all of them, especially the originals, are cheesy and contrived.

I guess I am alone in how I feel then.

I guess people are happy with films that just provide instant gratification these days with little to no character development.

Just a load of pretty people jumping from one CGI set piece to the next. Rinse and repeat.

No other reason why the transformers and fast and the furious films are so popular.
