Little or no back story about a significant character is hardly unusual in fiction.
Well that was a disappointment.
My ten year old daughter loved TFA but fell asleep half way through TLJ. I think that says it all in a nutshell. I cannot watch the original trilogy in the same light knowing what I have now seen. The ending of ROTJ is quite depressing watching it now.
The end credits with the tribute to Carrie was lovely and got a lot of applause from the audience, who really enjoyed the film as everyone laughed in unison throughout.
Just came back from the 1.50pm showing at Leicester Square....I really enjoyed it! It was far from perfect and they've disneyfied a few parts of the film but I laughed and hugely enjoyed the whole thing. I really believe this was one of the most recent films I've seen where 3D was done really well.
Like most, I wished they touched more on Snoke's backstory. I thought the way he died was really cheap and I was in disbelief at the entire scene because I expected a WHOLE lot more from this guy.
The opening battle was very poorly done. The Hux/Poe exchanges were funny yes, but to allow a single X-Wing to take out a massive battery of cannons on what is a battleship was hilarious.
Finn was wasted in this film. I felt sad for him because from what I recall at this moment he had very little to do.
The Leia/Superwoman thing was facepalm-tastic.
Hate to say it - the Porgs were hilarious. Poor Chewie!
Luke - I loved his scenes but expected a bigger role from him in this and at least some light saber use. Both Snoke and Luke's roles in this film I thought were a small let down.

The Luke scenes were brilliant, i thought it reminded us how flawed Luke was along with the Jedi order, and the Yoda interaction with Luke was just superb. Finn was under utilised but to me his role was crucial in how others other then the Jedi can deliver HOPE to others.
Adam Driver acting was superb in this film, also Mark Hamilton very close to him in performance

I think leia should have been killed in the explosion and stayed dead, killed not by her son, but the two "nobody" Xwing wingmen
And not fly back like superman......
Is the ginger general meant to be taken seriously or is his role meant to be a bit comedic? It was like Domhnall Gleeson looked at the script and thought 'Sod it! If they want a 2 dimensional bad guy I'll give them the most over acted stereotypical bad guy they've ever seen!'
On the plus side Adam Driver was a lot better in this film the previous film, very impressed by his performance. Mark Hamil, John Boyega were also good and I didn't mind Daisy Ridley either. However no amount of decent acting can cover up poor writing which this film was full of.
Anyone had much crowd reaction other than a few very small laughs here and there? There was a lot of reaction to TFA, almost zero to this one.

Have you seen the original film (episode IV) that started this all?
When Star Wars came out and I absorbed everything about it I could my 7 year old self couldn't understand why Alec Guinness was said to be disparaging of his role. Having not so long ago seen the film again I can, much older now, totally understand his feeling now because a lot of what he has to say is utter rubbish. It doesn't stop that film and consequently the franchise being deeply etched in my mental DNA.
Star Wars is like a reverie and to be enjoyed on that level. And on that level all the films work with aplomb.
