Star Wars VIII : The Last Jedi [WARNING: SPOILERS]

Just got back from watching in IMAX. I enjoyed it but a few bits didn't sit quite right with me. I also think I got myself too hyped up for it!

and WTF was that Leia in space bit all about?!

I thought Alec Guinness's issue was more along the lines of due to the success of Star Wars he was more likely to be remembered for that role than any of his prior work. He certainly did well out of it financially but having won a best actor Oscar for Bridge of the River Kwai I could see him not really wanting to be remembered for a relatively small role in SW.

I've just had a search in pursuance of your post and:
''And once he was on set, Guinness was no more impressed, writing to his friend:

... new rubbish dialogue reaches me every other day on wadges of pink paper – and none of it makes my character clear or even bearable''

Alec Guinness had a long and distinguished career putting in a brilliant performance in several classic films and TV (I can't assess his theatrical work). The Ladykillers is my favourite.

Anyone catch the leftist rubbish as well? :o

Pro women, anti men
Anti capitalism (casino planet and the speech about how rich people are greedy, bad war mongers)
Poe is completely disregarded and portrayed as an impulsive idiot who makes the horrible mistake of doubting the infinite wisdom of women, even though they simply refuse to share their reasoning with him when he raises very valid doubts about the situation.
It appears fights can no longer be won through military might or power, only through the selfless sacrifice of heroic women or the magical power of friendship.
Possibly anti meat with the Chewbacca scene, unless I'm reading it wrong. I couldn't tell if the creatures were after a bit of the meat, or against him eating it. Seems like it was put in to make a point about the horrors of eating meat

Hell, it even had a purple haired woman giving a speech about oppression.

I seriously think you are seeing stuff that isn't even there.

Tbf, I think those in the know do know that Sir Alec has a massive massive body of work and has turned out some classic performances/films. But yes, pop culture will probably only remember him for Obi-Wan.

Seems that anyone with 'The Force' now can pretty much do anything with zero training. Borderline ridiculous.
Leia, could have spent her past time learning to harness the force I would have assumed, but Rey lifting up those rocks with very little training was a bit OTT. They really need to delve into force use a lot better than they have done so far in the next film.

Makes the Jedi purge a complete waste of time. Recent films would suggest that they don't need training, holicrons or anything else. They can just randomly get the force and know how to use it.

It’s really interesting reading back though the collective thoughts. I really liked it but had prior zero hype / excitement. I think some people are being a bit overzealous with their criticisms.

It’ll be interesting seeing how it holds up. I think most of us would echo disappointment with TFA upon reflection, despite us collectively poo pooing easyrider at the time :p

People with bad taste and/or low expectations always seem to say this.

Clearly, if you are a Star Wars fan and know the movies intimately then your expectations are going to be high each time, as is the resulting disappointment when a movie is not up to scratch. Fans are often the harshest critics, and it is a tough thing to have grown up with the originals and suffered a rollercoaster of hype and disappointment ever since.

ultimately, I think I would have been happy if the following :

1.leia is just on the bridge and survives using the force, but without the mary poppins flying
2.less canto bight, they show up find the guy and leave, without the prison / horse chase
3.ackbar rams the supremacy (idealy leia but we have to let them off that CF died after filming)
4.proper luke vs kylo fight where luke dies in the fight
5.even just a one liner about who or what snoke is before he gets "mauled"

id be satisfied with just no.4, but the film would be better overall with just these small changes

Just got back from watching it with my son at an X Plus cinema.

VERY average I'm afraid. Pretty much my exact thoughts from when I first saw TFA. Seemed to set off in top gear, but then runs out of steam after 30 mins. I started watching thinking this is bloomin awesome, to "this has gone off the boil" and then finally "this is boring".

They do try to replicate the originals into these new ones don't they.....just let them stand on their own.

The main issue is that I honestly don't care about any of the characters.

Hux is weak
Kylo is a mummys boy
Rey is just.....meh

Great to see the real jedi master making a showing.......but what on earth was the whole leia flying through space thing? and killing snoke too easily. If he can read and manipulate minds he should have seen that one coming

would someone please spoiler tag the
leia
end credits scene please. I didn't know about it and let soon after.
Thought it was only marvel films which did that.
