Star Wars VIII : The Last Jedi [WARNING: SPOILERS]

I saw this in 4DX, thoroughly enjoyed that side of things, especially the space battle scenes, the feeling of blaster bolts zipping past your head is great.

I read up on the Porgs. Basically the island they shot the movie on was a natural habitat for Puffins. They are a protected species there and they couldn't do anything about it so they had to figure out how they could encorporate them into the movie.
Was easier to CGI over them rather than remove them.

Let's face it. These movies are designed by committee now.

The very best movies are generally adapted from best selling novels.

For a novelist it is critical that they develop a character because it is all on paper. The reader must fully understand who that character is because they can't be shown pictures.

Nah…… most books are better than the movies they turn into, generally. I mean how many times we've looked forward to an adaptation to come out only to be crap.

Having a good source material don't necessarily translate into great films. There are a million things that can go wrong or right between the book to the silver screen. Like Pirates of the Caribbean was a theme park ride and the movie wasn't that bad considering the source material.

But of course in the right hands you get an absolute gem like The Godfather, but it depends a lot in the screenwriter, director, cast, editing etc etc.

There is no magic formula really, I mean I don't think The Terminator was base on a book was it? That didn't stop it being great.

Having good source material helps build a world or help people to draw from it to build one but it doesn't stop a movie being good not having it base on a novel to begin with. One of the best movie of 2017 is Bladerunner 2049. Another sequel and like TLJ, it isn't base on any books either but the characters in that is well realised and very well drawn.

The whole universe seems to he based around non-Newtonian physics. When the ships ran out of fuel was ridiculous for example.

You're assuming all the ships weren't accelerating. If they were and a ship ran out of fuel, it would look like it was falling back compared to the other ships.

Old SW - A decent plot/script/characters are easy to generate.... Special effects and epic battles are difficult.
Modern SW - Special effects and epic battles are easy to generate.... A decent plot/script/characters (that tie in with SJW) are hard to come up with.

The biggest 1st to 2nd weekend earnings drop in history, along with the 40% difference between the critics score and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, shows Disney bought out those mercenaries to sell its turd to as many people as possible during the first week. Shameful but not unexpected.

There was never any fear of it losing money. Even the worst Star Wars movie is still automatically one of the best movies in a year to see and discuss, even if with pout on your lip and only in negative terms.

From personal perspective I was at at the "minute past midnight" premieres at my local cinema for the previous two SW movies and this year it was definitely the biggest crowd I've ever encountered in that cinema full stop, so either marketing has worked or those "minute past midnight" premieres became part of the generational folklore.

Although I haven't been to a midnight showing I have been to a late night showing on opening day for TFA and R1 and this. No one dressed up this time that I saw but plenty were for TFA.

If the Prequels couldn't kill Star Wars, I can't see how TFA, Rouge One and TLJ will do the series any harm in terms of their bottomline.

I think the problem with TLJ is that it's just not a very well made film. Yes it looks great, but the story veers off to pointless places, the characters are simplistic, the plot holes are large and obvious. Stuff that was given great importance in TFA was just dismissed in TLJ. It feels like a summer blockbuster film with a Star Wars theme, but other than that it's all explosions and merchandising. Michael Bay could have made this film with a Transformers theme. It's just a made by numbers tickbox film. There's no heart in it.

I think it would have been better received if it was just a well put together film. You might not have agreed with the story direction or character development, but at least those elements could have been competently executed.
This is why I hate box office numbers.

Films like blade runner 2049 just about break even while this smashes every record known to man

i don't believe that (not about the puffins the place is falling down with them) but that it was easier to cover them up with the porgs, if the close enough to see them then green screen and put in a bit of the island that has no puffins. ill bet if the saw the footage shot, there be lots of places the puffins were digital removed, no the porgs are there to sell toys
