EDIT: Also im curious , as CPU's are slower at folding, why is this guy building a CPU based folding machine?:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18529582

I love the build dont get me wrong but surely it would be better to have a rack of GPU's?

because they are server cpus, the intel cpus are even better, biffa , loudbob and baba all have intel & amd servers. look at there PPD lol loudbobs intel has hit nearly 1 million ppd from 1 of his servers.

its only in recent months gpus are doing huge numbers, and before that it was only NVidia , amd/ati use to be very poor at folding but now standford use open cl and cuda rather than just sideing with NVidia! hence me never having a amd gpu before but buying one now :cool::D

have a flick throw here

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18171167

also heres loudbobs pcs hes running, at one time he had something like 22 gpus? all top end running, swapped them out for 2 x intel servers and 1 x amd server, each with 4 cpus

biffa has 4 titans he's had folding up until recent, there offline now but they do fold, he has an intel and an amd server folding now though

not sure if the core 17 was what he was reffering to or standard WU's if they do core 17s correctly then I bet they are quite a good buy

Sorry I was being lazy and on my phone so searching was a pain :)

I think I need to buy another 7950, although I tried to use mine for folding yesterday but it wouldn't start, no error though and it has worked in the past. Think I need to check on it this weekend.

Awesome stuff, the big rig guys have some serious cash they put into folding, why do they spend 5 figure sums on rigs? Just for the fun of doing it while helping sort of thing?

Its amazing stuff, id never have this sort of money to do this :(

Another question, why do the real big rigs need massive amounts of RAM? Does folding require massive ram ?

high paid jobs lol :D its there hobby.

as for ram, it makes a big difference to the big rigs, loudbob added more ram to one of his servers and it added something like 100k ppd extra

We don't spend 5 figure sums :) and more often than not most parts are bought second hand. Then there is the return on selling our old hardware which helps recoup some of the cost. and finally there is the savings to be made from lower power usage of newer tech.

And of course most of us do it for the science having lost one or more friends and family to diseases that are being researched by the projects.

You've been quite quiet this last week or 2 biffa, you had your self a nice holiday  & on another note, did you ever manage to get the correct coolers delivered?

Its no so much more ram, its having enough ram to fill the slots to get dual or quad channel going on quad socket machines.

Although obviously, having more slots to fill means you often can end up getting more ram than you need unless you planned carefully to start with, which isn't always possible when you are trying to get all the bits to get a cruncher up and running asap

Hey guys been away from this for a while and only got acess to my laptop at the moment.
I've downloaded the latest FAH Tracker V2 and BOINC. Quick question, in FAH Tracker V2 configuration for the team box, do I just type "10" for ocUK?

I was planning just running BOINC atm, I have downloaded asteroid (its kinda quick) and docking. Is there any preference to which I use? Are you guys targeting anything in particular I guess I mean?

Thanks in advance
