the U.S. wouldn't want to draw attention to where it went down (every minute the Iraqi's are not aware of it's exact location the better the chances of the crew getting away, especially if the Iraqi's were not aware of it going down at the time*).
Once the Iraqi's are known to have found it on the other hand the reasons for leaving it intact are gone.
*assuming it was mechanical failure, in which case an explosion from the desert where the iraqi armed forces didn't have anything would probably have drawn attention.
