State Funded Slimming Classes

Assuming you could lease one/provide bank details in-case it 'goes missing' if it really would cost the NHS less then it should be seriously considered as a worthwhile program.
cutting tax on anything that helps people get fit and active might be a start.

Ah the usual GD ******** which surfaces every time there is a thread which is weight related I see ...

After 9 years and nearly 7,000 posts, you expected something else from this forum? You're still here so obviously don't object too strenuously.

That said, there are people in this topic debating the merits of the policy, with reasoning. You didn't do any of that. Care to join in the discussion yourself?

£100 for Weight Watchers? What a joke. It's hardly ideal.

Can't you eat as much fruit a day as you like as it constitutes to no points? ridiculous.

I'm down with the water melon diet.

lol sugar content.
I'm sure it's not as bad for you as processed sugar but still you can eat as much as you want ? :D

I had no idea watermelon's nutritional info was off the scale like this.

Again, this proves my point exactly and I will be using this watermelon example when slating Weight Watchers to everyone who believes in it ;)

I would advocate Intermittent Fasting following more of a paleo diet if and when I lose weight (after bulking) but this is slowly going off topic.

Anyways. Good idea but lazy approach.

It's probably not even the worst fruit with regards to sugar content and weight

bare in mind that chart is based on one big ass water melon.
I don't think I've ever seen one 15 inches long weighing 4,500g in this country but even just 100g of watermelon is 6g of sugar in only 30 calories
You might as well just mix water and sugar and eat that? I doubt water melon is very filling either.

Sorry, what's so bad about the sugar content? 280g per 4.5kg watermelon - so about 10-15g* sugar per 200g serving.

*very rough calculation in my head

Totally agree that it's a bad idea to classify fruit as 'free' food though.

RDA of carbs is supposed to be 130g according to google.
the sugar in a water melon is probably all fructose

Oh right. I thought the carbs RDA was about 300g. But if it's that much lower, yeah, 15g is pretty significant.
Do weight watchers really say you can eat as much fruit as you like?
Too Much of a Good Thing
Even though watermelon is fat-free and low in calories, eating too much of it can interfere with weight loss and weight maintenance efforts. Dr. Melina Jampolis, CNN.com's physician nutritionist specialist, recommends limiting yourself to three servings of fruit per day if you're trying to lose weight. While the sugar in fruit is healthier than refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup, it still contains the same number of calories per serving, so it cannot be consumed in unlimited quantities," Jampolis says. Terese Scollard, registered dietitian and manager for Providence Nutrition Services, agrees. "If you go overboard on one kind of food, you'll miss out on the valuable properties of other healthy foods," she says.

Why do people need a class to understand that less cakes and more exercise = not a disgusting fat mess?

People need to want to lose weight, if they don't then a class won't help them. If they do then they don't need a class to do it.

swimming lessons would be good for them.

I see weight watchers as a waste of time, people will likely have to attend but not bother actually trying just so they can get a medical procedure instead. it just looks like money going to private companies for no reason at all when the people doing it are only there because they have to give it a go before they get a gastric band or whatever

Agree with both.

Disagree that we should pay for people to go swimming. Exercise is free.

People need to want to lose weight
<snip>

Yes, but it's often more than that. They need to want to lose weight more than they want/feel they need to eat as a 'solution' to their other problems. Comfort eating is a very powerful compulsion, which those who have never suffered such a compulsion rarely understand.

As such maybe they could consider classes that teach people how to take more control over stressful aspects of their lives, how to be comfortable with their own self worth (rather than just pretending to be), and how to identify their triggers and redirect them to something more constructive than eating.
