Steam Machine (OS) Build

Are you guys just using controllers to drive with a TV or are you still using the machine as a desktop as well with keyboard and mouse?

I see that the requirements for Steam OS is an "AMD powered" PC. Does that mean an AMD APU like the Steam Deck and Steam Machine? Or a normal AMD CPU (and chipset) + AMD GPU? Or just the GPU?

Either call them , email or use the support ticket option with your list of components for a quote.
Exactly this being going for last 15 odd years

Give them a full list, request custom build they add build tax and quoted and invoiced and additional warranty

Lot lot less likely for DOA as they did 3 days stress testing on mine

Amd zen3 or higher should just work
Both GPU and cpu atm

Everything was detected even my custom usb mixer sac
Bluetooth/ethebet/wifi 6e all just work

Not got steam os on it yet, just windows and game pass. Thing is so quiet, and I only have two fans. So far CPU and GPU not been above 60 degrees.

Looks great ! Have been considering building my own "Steam Machine" over the last year or so to replace my PS5 Pro for gaming in the living room. How easy was it to install SteamOS ? I presume this build came without any OS pre-installed ?

edit. And my Steam Controller will be arriving in a few days lol.

Super easy, easiest install ive EVER done
I have done windows mac and linux @xaldub

Download the steam recovery image
Flash it based on your OS
i used DD cli on mac but rufus works and guide is on steams site

Once flashed to a usb stick thsts 16gb (image is 8.1GG)

Important BIOS
secure boot disabled
Ensure UEFI BOOT NOT CSM
steam will choose first nvme drive it finds so ensure only the one exists you want

Tell bios to boot usb
A live linux desktop appears
Click erase and install
43 seconds for usb to copy partitions to your nvme and install the os
Pc reboots
Unplug usb
Steam boots
Downloads any steam updates
You get asked
Language
Tinezone
Told to pair a controller if you have one to pair

Done thats it
Entire install with reboots was 1m 43seconds. (Timed)

It was so fast i i started eating a jubbly trinagle and OS finished before i did

Even S3/4/5 sleep work out the box
My custom dac and dongles just work too

Should have done this earlier, not installed steam os yet as want gamepass so will make the switch when I can be bothered rebuilding it all again, might wait until I have a spare SSD just for it. Plays everything lovely and despite me having to remove one fan from the AIO as it wouldn't fit over my RAM, the thing is super cool. CPU and GPu both never above 60 so far in testing. I will set an undervolt on CPU when I can be bothered with the whole stability testing malarky. Plague tail resonance, BF 6 and subnautica 2 play incredibly well though and windows cotroller support is far better than I had imagined. No worries now on Sonys no physical bull**** I can just wait for steam sales :-)

Gave mine a proper work out with games this weekend, cant believe how quiet the 9070 non XT and 7800X3D are with the minimal cooling I have, can't hear anything even when BF6 is running. Can honestly see me putting an RDNA 5 card in this box before my desktop.

Subnautia 2 at 4k on my couch is the perfect way to relax :-)

I'm looking to get a Steam Machine,
Moving away from PS5 Pro, due to Sony Crap they are pulling (Age verification in insecure ways, Slow at fixing bugs, Missiong KB/Mouse games)

Currently using a Steam Deck hooked up to my 5K monitor & for some games its perfect for others It struggles at 1080p

So looking for help To spec out a Custom Hardware Configuration That can match or Beat The Steam Machine with 2TB at £1200 (-£70 for OCUK to build)

Requirements
  • 5K support (60hz is fine) Do not need to game at 5K But higher the better (5k = 5120x2160) Deck can scroll steam os any 5K no issue
  • must have 2TB to Match Steam Machine
  • This will be Indie / AA Gaming Rig Not expecting AAA at 5K. But 1080p be nice
  • Must Support Steam OS (AMD) only

  • Games playing
    • Stardew Valley < deck plays at 5K
    • Euro Truck Sim -< Deck Struggles
    • Schedule 1 <- Deck Struggles
    • Fields of Minstra < deck plays at 5k
    • Colverpit < deck struggles at 720p
    • Restory < deck can manage 800p
    • Sim games would be nice (Planet Coaster such)
Do you have an old AM4 MB/RAM etc lying around? If you got the 5800X3D CPU and reused some older hardware, that would make quite a formidable machine for quite a low price and then pickup whatever fancy GPU you want and probably have money to spare for getting nice controllers or whatever.

Saying that, the 7600X is heck of a good price at OcUK right now, so if you are set on AM5 that, I'd get that while you can.

EDIT: NVM.. saw you already bought :) I just put Steam OS on my original Legion Go, and it's so much better than Windows. I'm also likely to have a spare AM4 machine soon as I'm slowly building a new system, and might recommission it as a living room steam machine :)

Built my recent pc using a really cheap case that cost me £50 new (was like 200 when it came out a year ago)

Antec Performance 1M, spec is pretty decent, AM5 7950X3D, 32gb DDR5, 5070ti

Runs like an absolute dream, like a slightly bigger and faster Steam Machine that's still ultra portable.

I have been looking at the M1 case recently for a new build. Can I ask what CPU cooler are you using?

Yea sure it's the Thermalright AXP120-X67

Works really well tbh - I have a slim line 5070ti so I had a decent amount of space on the cpu side so it's not right up against the side panel

That's good to know, I think that's the cooler I've purchased but only using it for a 7700 for now. I bought it for down the line when switching out CPUs

I’ve moved to cachyos because I was using desktop mode more than big picture abd flatpak program were not enough

Cachyos feels faster but is bleeding edge
Much newer kernels
