Steve Jobs has died. What effect, if any, will it have on Apple and the tech industry?

Who cares about having a sig? There are people that put their specs in their sig, their car, countless people still have the khaaan pictorial, not to mention other memes.

Showing respect isn't a fashion statement, like you make out.

So you're here to wind people up then, that's pretty obvious from those two posts and your post in the other thread.

I wouldn't bother if I were you.

Firstly - I was quoting someone else who was "+1'd " by many many people in this thread other than me and secondly suggesting the greatest minds in the world work at Apple is possibly the most ludicrously ignorant statement I've ever seen posted in these forums.
Since you appear to have some sort of reputation for being someone of some intelligence I assumed you were joking.

Untwist your knickers and calm down sweetie :)

Wow, the followers of the Cult of Apple are really starting to come out of the woodwork now. A truly cringe worthy, embarrassing sight to behold.

There's a reason some Apple users are called MacFags, some people in this thread have solidified that statement.

I am talking to a friend about this after seeing this on the other thread

I was like....that's a White iPhone...no its not...look closer, its Samsung.

But....it's white, same dimension ish, same placements of speakers, front camera, sync cable and home button, and even same colour battery charge icon!

Then we talk about smart phone, how it was before the iPhone...the N95 for example was considered to be a market leader at the time. It has 3G, it has expandable memory, it has a 5 mega pixel camera with flash (it took until the IP4 before that appears), but what I remember wasn't any of that.

I remember the construction being plastic everywhere.

I remember the sliding mechanism to landscape utterly pointless.

I remember the UI was awful, using those arrows key to move the cursor around....sooo slow.

So what made Apple and it's iPhone great? even though it did less than the N95? i.e. 2G, crap camera, no expandable memory (remember how big a deal that was?).

Their idea wasn't new, but the execution was.

They manage to take an existing idea and then do it better than everyone else. Then everyone else copy them.

Exhibit A right there in that Samsung phone.

Obviously it's hard to compare, but in their respective fields I imagine Apple have some of the best people around, don't you think so? Perhaps I should have made the respective fields part more clear.

Yet it's funny how iOS looks remarkably like windows mobile in many ways... Its also only Samsung that seems to have instigated a copy and paste approach to Apple, have a look at HTC's stuff, a company that had been making smartphones for years before Apple came along in a similar style.

Apple are the king of amalgamation various designs, stripping away the complex stuff and speeding it up, then releasing it just as the technology was right. The last few devices to the fanfare of the world media and multi billion dollar advertising campaigns.

The month before the iPad was launched there were several (read double figures) tablets shown by small (and not so small) companies all looking remarkably similar to the soon to be announced iPad. A similar thing happened with the iPhone and also with iPods. Apple pick their time and jump in right at the start of the wave and (unfortunately in some ways) drown out a lot of the smaller competition that released their products at the same time.

Don't get me wrong, that's an enviable skill in itself, I just think Apples ability to predict the market means a lot of people give them too much credit in the innovation side of things.

You missed everything else I said?

The bit where I criticised the iPhone being 2G, cameras way behind the competition and no expandable memory?

Or do you cherry pick points that only suit your argument and ignore all other factors?

In the technology world everybody copies what sells all the time, look at Dyson and its bagless hoover, now every hoover on the market is bagless.

Realistically? For the next few years I doubt it will make any difference what so ever. Jobs, being well known for his perfectionism has probably already got the cogs moving for the next few years - especially considering this is not a surprising death. Tim Cook, I believe is more than capable of running the company.

In the long run however, it might really start to have an impact. Jobs was an inspirational speaker and a fantastic marketer.

I'm not sure however how much Apple will be able to continue to produce ultra-sleek, ultra-convenient products for, without Jobs' influence and contributions.

Add to that as said above, the growing power of Apple, and Samsung's 'plagiarism,' and you have a real issue for Apple.

Saying that, I really really doubt that Apple being the multi-national conglomorate will be complete powereless, it just might fall down in it's truly revolutionary products - the iPod changed everything. The iPhone changed everything (the newer incarnations certainly didn't 'change everything again'...)

TBH, I would have betted on Apple to produce the first holographic item...

kd

Probably said already but ipad changed everything as well. Experts pannned it but 30 million have been sold and even Window8 is for the tablet all thanks to the "pad"

I'm sur eit will have an effect on Apple, but life without Jobs at the helm will still go on. The greatest thing Steve Jobs ever invented was Apple itself and the company isn't going to change overnight. They've just appointed a CEO who has been working closely with Jobs for many years. Apple aren't like HP, they haven't hired a new leader from another company. Every member of Apples executive staff have been thinking "the Apple way" for a long time now.
