Struggling to keep interest

I simply can't be bothered with spending more than two minutes learning a game sufficiently to play it any more. Even the tiniest of irritations has me exiting to desktop when in the past I'd have persevered.

I think that's the single biggest problem with gamers today. They simply cannot be bothered to invest any time, effort or patience into it.

I also think playing games has become 'collecting games' or basically just 'shopping', some have dozens of games they'll never play more than once.

I would agree, it's a nasty spiral as well because the more lazy gamers there are the more micro transaction, pay to win, no brain bull **** developers release to pander to the lowest common denominator. People who want challenge are then left scrabbling round for something half decent. Luckily the indie scene has stepped up as main stream is low risk, max reward generic **** (in the main)

I found myself somewhat in this situation too. Bored to tears by games except one: Borderlands 2. I was obsessed. To stop myself I deleted the game! I even started trying to play some games from my backlog and blog about it but I got bored by that too!

In all honesty I've actually switched off games and gone on to playing Board/Card/Tabletop games and I'm having more fun for it! Just need some more players now :p

A game that I recently enjoyed was mad max, a good game that could have been epic if they didn't implement such a crappy repetitive collect scrap system (which your forced to do).

Nothing like upgrading to a 3440x1440 ultra wide monitor to inject a bit of life back in to your games. Worked for me. Also recommend revisiting the original F.E.A.R to remind you how much fun you can have!

We do need more games with original story campaigns though. Bioshock Infinite blew my mind, I loved every minute was genuinely gutted when it was finished.

I didn't even finish Bioshock Infinite, just found it really boring and repetitive like most shooters.

I've got tons of games in steam I haven't even installed, never mind played!

That's the killer blow for me, the fact that I can't even be bothered to install a game I've bought and not played, I've probably even got tons of keys in lost emails I haven't even used as well. Embarrassing...

Been trying to finish it the past 4 years. I swear one day it will happen!

Anyone else not able to play for very long any more? I used to enjoy the long drawn out process of involved games, but now I can barely play for an hour before just switching it off.

I used to enjoy building up careers in things like driving games, now I'll just fire it up and maybe drive a couple of laps of a track in an open session and then turn it off, sometimes I even close the game before I've even played it, bored even with the thought of it.

It's a shame because when I was poor and playing a lot of games I would have killed for a system I have now, now I have it and I can't be bothered to use it :(

The older I get the more I enjoy the PC games I play to the point there just isn't enough hours in the day!!

I guess i'm spoilt by choice, I know a good game when I play one and I have a few I play over and over.

You have to balance your addiction, go to work > do the family thing > watch tv series/films > interact socially > play guitar/do hobby.

If gaming is boring then your not doing it right :p

You may as well just give up, you're not interested any more. If I were you i'd find another hobby.

That's not having a go by the way. Just common sense.

My problem is that I've spent so long playing FO4 and not much else (just finished a fifth run-through) virtually solid since December, it has been hard to wean off it and do anything else. Have done similar with Deus Ex last year and Mass Effect before that. In some respects that's a credit to the devs and publishers for producing something that hooks, but the downside is that it becomes very hard to switch off and play something else which - daft as it sounds - can make you start to resent the game you're actually enjoying!

Where I do struggle these days is on the creative side. For many years I've dabbled in the train sim scene, creating routes to share with the wider community. However the last 18 months - 2 years I have become incredibly unfocused, starting a project only to drop it in favour of something else that looks a better prospect, a week or two later. Almost a form of gaming ADD, if anyone else can relate to that. (Of course it's not helped by the half finished, buggy or downright user unfriendly elements that some of the train sim editors manifest which quite often just causes me to rage delete a project).

I don't play many games, but I still game a lot every night and every weekend.

Since GTAV came out on pc I have invested well over 1000 hours into the multiplayer and a good 300+ in sp. I was logging in every night for hours on end.

With the division, that has taken the spotlight away temporarily and I have put 300+ hours into that as well with some major sessions over the weekends.

Aside from those two games, I have dabbled in the new need for speed and was playing starcraft 2 with some friends from work.

I do live alone though, so have the time to do this after work etc.

Time is a big factor. I have a young family now so literally need to plan game time.

I bought GTAV in Feb and completed it last week (what a cracking game that is ;))

How can one blame the customer for not enjoying the product? Why accuse the gamer of being "lazy" instead of looking at the product and seeing how it can be improved to suck someone in? If your customers are exiting to desktop in 2 minutes there's likely to be room for improvement.

Also remember most of it has been done already.

If you have been gaming for a number of years you have most likely played most genre's and iterations of each.

This is why storyline is so important. GTAV was fantastically written for example.

I struggle too... it's like phones and reddit have ruined me. I am addicted to the constant stream of instantly gratifying information, which honestly sucks. The brain wants something new every second, so when I have to sit and concentrate on a cut-scene or something it can't handle it. I can barely watch game of thrones without doing some idle crap on second monitor :/

I think it's time for a technology detox week or something

Me and a few friends going through the same problem also. Used to be huge wow fans but since it turned into crap lol. Its hard to find much else to keep us hucked.

Not played much properly in month,s other than cod but thats only really for an hour or so.

Games are getting worse it seems.

I've been cynical about VR but am warming to the idea. Perhaps it's the way forward for the war-weary gamer. Pick your scenario, put the headset on and do what you want to do in the world, without a set of contrived rules.

I found myself in a similar situation and started a thread on here to take votes on which of my unplayed games I should play and then forced myself to play it through. Ended up playing saints row 3 and had a blast.

You might have a gem of a game in your library and not even know it. Sometimes when you have so much choice it can be hard to stick to a game when you aren't sure if it's the perfect game for that exact moment. Having that choice removed can actually really help. In a weird way, adding discipline to my gaming really helped me enjoy my games more. I still keep one mulitplayer game like rocket league on the go for taking breaks, but otherwise I try to stick to a single game until I complete it.

If I were the list the most recent games that truly gripped me, they would be:

Mass Effect series
The Witcher Series
Borderlands Series
Most Telltale games
Bioshock Infinite

That's a sad state of affairs, I only have the new Walking Dead TT miniseries keeping me going (along with small stints of MapleStory or Heroes of Might & Magic with my gf), and the only things I am actually looking forward to are Planet Coaster and the Cyberpunk game CDProjekt Red are working on.
