Students = Cheap windows 7

99% of you don't need Ultimate so why is everyone faffing for Ultimate? 7 Pro is what Vista Ultimate was pretty much but I'm assuming many people don't realise this still...
I'm on Vista Ultimate 64-bit and would prefer to do an in-place upgrade, as I don't have time to be faffing with a complete rebuild. In-place upgrade only works in my case with Ultimate->Ultimate.

Otherwise I will have to wait until February when Uni course-work subsides sufficiently for me to have time.

It's also nice to have the multi-language pack, that only comes with Ultimate.

E2A: I'm leaving my pre-order on Win7 Ultimate until I see some more details about this upgrade offer.

Let me get this clear, this entitles me to what exactly? An .iso image and a key? Or a retail box?

Does upgrade version mean i cany do a clean install with it?
If it's run along the same lines as The Ultimate Steal offers it'll be an iso, with the option to get it on DVD for an extra £9.

Was going to get the Ultimate Steal today, but couldn't find a DVD option anymore...

Anyone know what happens with the Win7 upgrade offer though? Does a Vista key have to be provided at purchase, and when does the Vista key get expired? I'd like to buy the £30 ugprade, and keep it until next year before I rebuild my Vista machine.

Don't know, it was included by default last time I looked, you had to uncheck it if you wanted download only.

How exactly do I login to MSDN:AA? I'm a bit confused by it all. My uni is listed as eligible (University of Glasgow) but do I need to pay or what?
Ask the IT helpdesk. First of all they have to offer it, not sure if every university does as it costs them money - though it's probably a cheap way to kit out their labs. Secondly you have to be eligible, which I guess means being on an IT related course.

I'm confused. Its £30 for either home premium or the pro edition... but since the pro edition doesn't actually have anything missing from it compared to HP, why on earth would you settle for HP?

If you are on Vista Home Premium, you can do an in-place upgrade to Win7 Home Premium but not the Pro, which requires a clean install.

its an upgrade edition for sure...does that mean we need to install vista first and then upgrade or you can enter the vista cdkey during the 7 installation?

If its anything like Vista you will be able to do the Install without a key then install over its self with the key trick as said somewhere above.

Well, ideally I'd be getting a new hard drive and sticking 7 on there anyway, so hopefully it will detect my Vista install on a seperate hard drive and see that I'm upgrading. I'm running Vista Ultimate from the ultimate steal, so a simple upgrade's out anyway.

Sorry for sounding noobish about all this. Lol.

Im at the same stage as you, Im at Strathy though. At the register bit after you select the school you attend, there is a 'Contact' selection. Once you click on that, there will be the email address of the professor/representative at Glasgow that you have to email (state your course, matric. number etc.) too see if you are eligible for registration. Then if you are they will email you back the student ID number you require to register.

I emailed my dude last night, so it's an anxious wait till Monday to see if I can get some windows 7 goodness :) I start back on friday so hopefully I can get it and get it all set up for then.

are you only allowed one? i'm trying to make sense of what this is but i'm lost :( my brother will be going to uni tomorrow and then have a uni email i assume. at the moment i am using win7 rc and have been since it was released. it's the only os i have. Can he buy the student os for me and another for himself at the discounted price? if not is it possible he can buy me one now, and then in say 6 months buy it again as i know he wont be wanting it now or maybe even ever but just to be safe i don't want to use his chance at a cheaper os.

also will it work for me given I only have win7 rc which will require a fresh install.

edit: if he can't get it for me, then i'll need to but win7 home premium. is the price currently at £66 on ocuk because it's a preoder and once it's released it'll go up in price?

Just cancelled my pre-order of Win7 Ultimate, going to either get the student offer of Professional or wait for Ultimate OEM.

Don't have time for a complete re-install of my OS right now. Hope I can keep the student bought offer and do the upgrade next year.

Not sure about getting a new HDD, might just reformat my 250GB OS drive and install Win7 on there. Could be tempted with a SSD, but think I might wait a year for them to mature a little.

EDIT: Just wondering about the restrictions on this Student upgrade offer. I currently have Vista Ultimate OEM, I'd like to get Win7 on there, but I plan on getting a new motherboard/processor (i7) next year. Does the upgrade of an OEM Vista result in an OEM tied Win7 under the student offer? If so, then I'd still need to buy Win7 again when I got my new machine?
