Students = Cheap windows 7

I created an bootable dvd from the d/l using this guide. Worked for me.

ANSWER TO : UPGRADING/CLEAN INSTALLING FROM A WINDOWS XP 32BIT SYSTEM TO WINDOWS 7 64BIT SYSTEM - DOES WORK, FACT, IF IT DOESN'T YOU DIDN'T DO EXACTLY WHAT I SAID.

1. Download the oscdimg.exe into your system32 folder (C:\Windows\System32)

You can download oscdimg.exe here: http://www.sevenforums.com/attachme...124-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l-oscdimg.zip

2. Cut and paste Win7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64, setup1.box, setup2.box into your C:\ - - just C:\! not my docs. (saves on complicated paths!)

3. Run the Win7-HP-Retail-en-us-x64.exe - let it run until it finishes with the error!

4. You will now have the expandedSetup folder in C:\ despite the error you received!

5. Now go into your start menu > Run > enter 'cmd' then hit return to load up the command prompt!

6. Now enter the following into the command prompt - and nothing but.. type what I put in bold ... exactly what I do, do not change anything at all!

cd C:\ - press enter! (don't type this)

oscdimg.exe –u2 –b"C:\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" –h "C:\expandedSetup" C:\WIN7.ISO - press enter! (don't type this)

...your computer will now create an iso file called 'WIN7.iso' which when complete can be located in your C:\

7. Type Exit in your command prompt.

8. Download the ISO tool provided yesterday by Microsoft and install it (you may need to resart your system upon completion of the install - not a problem, just reboot and carry on) You can download the tool here: http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool

9. Launch the tool once you have rebooted and select DVD > Now browse for your file located; C:\WIN7.iso hit ok, insert your blank DVD and hit ok - get a coffee and wait for the burn to complete!

10. Reboot your system when you have your boot disc ready. Enter the BIOS and go into the CMOS settings... change your primary boot device to CD-ROM, your computer will reboot automatically upon you saving your new settings and load up the disc! YAY! It does take a little while, and when you reach the start up install splash you will have to wait about 5 minutes for it do anything, but it works!

Goodluck and I REALLY hope this helps at least some of you! I'm not sure if this will work for other versions of windows but this IS THE WAY THAT WORKS 100% FOR 32BIT XP USERS - FACT.

Microsoft always put a sting in their offers.
However when I ordered the dvd it says underneath 64 bit dvd kit "office ultimate 2007 dvd backup". I hope this some kinda typo, anyone else had this when ordering the backup dvd or am I about to receive a shiny backup copy of office (to go with my other shiny office dvd)?
Yes, also assumed a typo. My DVD was attempted delivery by UPS on Monday, I told them to come back Wednesday, so will find out tomorrow.

I made an iso using the command line and it installed fine on a blank drive in a virtual machine. Just installed the version it was no problems, didn't have to enter a key either.

Mine installed fine after I had formatted my hard drive using a burnt iso I made from the downloaded files using imageburn. It asked for the key after the install during the initial setup bit where you enter your name and stuff.

Downloaded the files from Microsoft. Used the oscdimg.exe file to create and ISO, burnt the ISO using the Microsoft USB DVD Tool, booted from the ISO, selected Custom Install, deleted my Windows 7 RC partition, formatted the drive, installed onto the blank space, entered they key when asked and activated online when I was done setting up my wifi adapter.

Clean, single install using x64 Professional Upgrade key and download.

Can anyone please help? I bought the upgrade Pro version and basically put it onto USB as a bootable.

I am now installed but when I want to activate it I get a message that this license is only for an upgrade and not a clean installation.

This is a brand new HD that I have installed to, perhaps when I first booted the USB and was given the option of clean or upgrade, I should have clicked upgrade? (but then the HD was formatted and empty... upgrade from what  ?) Please help :(

"Has anyone tried installing onto a fresh out the box hard drive using the £9 'backup DVD'?"

this is what I want to know as well

+1

I'm hoping it's a genuine holographic DVD, otherwise it would be a waste of money just to get a backup of the digital download files which I can burn myself.

But... why this way? Surely there has to be another way? I.e. select Upgrade from the beginning?

No you would have to choose clean install as upgrade requires a previous OS to be there, i'm not sure why it has done that to you tbh as most people have been able to install to a wiped hard drive. Someone else earlier in the thread had a problem installing to an SSD that had been secure erased and it seems that new HDD's are having a similar problem. Installing over it again seems to fix it.

Look on the bright side, it probably won't happen again as next time you install it won't be a "new" HDD :D

It is a genuine holographic DVD you recieve.

Is it? I kinda wish I'd ordered one now :(

Just to say that my friend (dirty student) was shown this post after downloading his W7 64b student edition.

He was on Vista 64b but did a Clean install. This guide worked perfectly.

Thanks gasdoctor!

So if I were to follow gasdoctor's guide, will the resultant dvd function the same as a retail dvd? i.e. can I whack it in a new build with no previous OS on and install win 7 or will I still have to install xp/Vista first?

when i type this in i get "could not delete file expandedsetup" or similar and whenever i go to change the folder properties from read only it changes it back automatically?

Not sure, only thing I can say is did you definitely type it properly.

For me it created an .iso which booted as if it was an ms disc, there wasnt even a lengthy hang at the splash screen. (which some have reported)

The only thing which is a bit dubious is, I installed to a new hdd, but I had my old xp OS on an old drive still attached. It is possible that it looks for previous installs to verify an upgrade. However ms say that a clean upgrade is possible with this licence

I've been having problem with BSOD and other things so i've just re-installed win7 pro again but why is it you can't activate it from a clean install ? why should i have to install an upgrade on top of the clean install ?
