Students = Cheap windows 7

So if I were to follow gasdoctor's guide, will the resultant dvd function the same as a retail dvd? i.e. can I whack it in a new build with no previous OS on and install win 7 or will I still have to install xp/Vista first?

I am not 100% sure about this, my friend who did it did have Vista32b on his machine before going through the process of booting from DVD, formatting and installing.

It would make sense to be able to boot it on a fresh machine and install it that way, but I really don't know.

You can do full custom install with it, you don't even have to touch the upgrade part. At least it was like that for me.

Just make yourself a bootable disc with the downloaded files, boot from it and your away.

How did you make the .iso image?
Are you upgrading from an earlier windows or starting a fresh ie new system etc?

I just wonder whether if you dont use the tools provided by ms you get an invalid copy, if you see what I mean?

Hmm just wondering, I dont need to download this at college/uni do I, I have given my ac e-mail address and then what happens, I recieve an email there can i logon and forward to my hotmail address and download at home?

No you don't need to download it at college/uni. The email just includes login details and instructions on how to purchase the software, you can do that and download the software wherever you want.

This worked for me on a brand new hard drive. First install - selected Custom instead of upgrade. Accepted Key straight away & activated.

Just a side note, I found I can access my Uni email from outside through their off campus access. It states in the email that forwarding the email invalidates the offer, but I dont know how they check (unless ms can tell where your linking from....??), so suspect thats just bs.

For those with problems, would be nice to know what they are upgrading from and what thy are installing on, to see if there are any obvious discrepencies. Its a bit strange how it works fine for some yet others are struggling. (good ole MS)
